Not really. If a figure is inaccurate and people are trying to make out it's fact, it's still inaccurate.

Who's trying to make out its a fact in this instance?

As as limited company Doncaster Rovers have to publish annual accounts. As part of those accounts would they maybe include a provision for players wages? We can all look up the size of the squad for any club and therefore come up with an average salary. I can't be bothered to do that myself but maybe staff at footy.com have done. I have no idea, but just guessing how these stats may be correct. Who knows short of accusing footy.com of being liars and producing fake information.

Our staffing wages on our accounts include the management team, ground staff, admin staff, youth apprenticeship wages, etc, etc. Just dividing that number by the number of players in our first team would include dozens of other people.

My point is that however true or false the list is if Rovers figures had been more complimentary there would have been less response regarding its inaccuracy.

I don't see how that's the case. I'd have questioned it if it had suggested we had the best or worst budget or anywhere in between.

False information is rife on the internet so seeing something like this needs to be challenged for verification straight away, especially knowing what our fans are like. Some may read this stuff as fact then use it as "evidence" to have a go at the club which simply wouldn't be fair at all.

Any information they have is not likely to be for current budgets, but for previous years.

Staff costs including playing staff does not allow a figure for average playing wages to be assessed.

An average is meaningless as it would include young lads being paid with Cheese n Onion and a Fanta alongside senior professionals. Basic wages will usually be accompanied by variable performance incentives.

All in all, completely without meaning.

The only thing I’ll say on wages is the last time wages were on the accounts was 2014/2015 season so they are not up to date if they used them.

I think almost everyone would have questioned it if it had suggested that we had the best budget! I say almost because I'm sure one or two of the dreamers would have believed it and used it as evidence to have a go at the lesser contented among us.

As it states that our players are about average pay wise, I reckon it won't be far off the mark, whether it's based on conjecture or otherwise, and the OP was just showing an article of interest and not searching for confrontation.

I feel as though I have unwittingly opened a can of worms, and people are making a mountain out of a mole hill, especially when in my opening post I did question the numbers.
They do however substantiate the fact that our budget was in the top half of this division, as the club said.
And that having a big budget, is no guarantee of being at the top end of the division, Northampton, Bury And MK Dons proving the point.

How do they substantiate that? There's no way they know our players wages so that final figure for us will be wrong, along with the other 23 clubs in the league and they might be a completely different order too. We might be in the top half wage wise but I don't trust these figures at all.

After the 1990 World Cup, Des Walker signed for Sampdoria. His reported wages were £25k per week. He was one of the outstanding players of that tournament, but even so his wages at the time caused something of a sensation.

Fast forward a generation and if the quoted figures are correct, the AVERAGE wage at a club who didn’t make the final of the play-offs in Tier 2 are only a few bob behind that. Whilst the average wages of the two worst sides in Tier 1 are 50% higher.

There is no current English defender who is remotely as good, by relative standards as Walker was then. But according to widely reported figures, Stones and Cahill are both paid £100k per week. And no-one bats an eyelid. A player of Walker’s quality, relative to current standards would probably be paid £200k per week today.

Over the same period, average UK wages for the rest of us have less than doubled.

In a few weeks time we’ll once more see this bunch of obscenely overpaid players reveal their limitations against the world’s best. And no doubt average football wages will go up once again next season.

Football eh? f**king hell.

They don't substantiate anything I'm afraid Selby. There's no evidence these figures are based in reality and I highly doubt that they are.

It is an interesting topic to discuss but without actual real figures I find it all futile at best, and dangerous at worst (not from you personally).

I certainly do believe you're merely trying to raise discussion of interest by the way Selby, I can't speak for others but I certainly am not after confrontation.

Instead of the usual bickering on this site I contacted footy.com and asked where they got their information. So there you have it....

Thanks for getting in touch. The source is shown behind the 'i' symbol on the homepage of the tool, we should have made this clearer and will do on any future campaigns. Here is the full information:

METHODOLOGY
For the 20 Premier League clubs, we took average weekly salary figures from the 2017 Global Sports Salary Survey. For the 72 EFL clubs, we looked at weekly wage data from the 2018 edition of Football Manager, taking an average of each team’s first team squad’s weekly earnings. The data from the game has been applauded on numerous occasions for its accuracy, and is even a recognised scouting system for clubs, as a result of their 1,300 researchers across the globe.

To find the average weekly earnings of the fans, we looked at the median weekly pay figures for the local authority of each teamfrom the latest ‘Annual Salary of Hours and Earnings’ from the Office for National Statistics. (For London teams, we looked at the average earnings for their local borough.)

We then divided the teams’ average earnings with the fans to find out how much more they earned.

This thread could be going round in circles until the season starts.
I have no interest in guesswork.
Roll on August.
My last comment on this thread.

Funny how so many people on this site always have to have the last comment even if if is to say "this is my last comment".   hahaha.
Just stop reading the thread and watch TV or something.

Football Manager, who get clubs fans to come up with the data for their players. It's probably just a guesstimate then.

At least we know where the data all came from and how it was calculated. Whether we put any value in it or not is a personal thing. I haven't played Football Manager myself. And whether their accuracy claims are enough to convince me, I don't know. But as Selby says, it's just a bit of fun, and maybe sceptics ought to waste their time elsewhere.
I don't comment much on this site as most threads turn out to be confrontational in the end.

BST - whilst I completely agree that these amounts are obscene, what Gary Cahill is paid these days has absolutely nothing to do with his relative ability to a centre back who last kicked a ball in anger about 20 years ago. It has everything to do with Sky’s money. If the Sky money had been in the game after Italia 90 Walker would have been paid accordingly.

As a slight aside, I went to university in Nottingham, and my best mate there was a Forest fan. We once went into a Subway just off campus at about 6pm on a Monday night in late 2006 and queued behind none other than Des Walker. He was a gibbering wreck (my friend, not the Forest stalwart) the whole length of the queue, until Des was on his way out with his foot long (naturally). My mate finally found his voice and bellowed out “YOU’LL NEVER BEAT DES WALKER”. Never a truer word spoken.

Nick

Your point about the new money in football was exactly what I was driving at. It’s utterly obscene.

I read a week or two ago that if Messi was walking down the street and dropped a €2 coin, by the time he’d bent down to pick it up, he’d have already earned €2.

Just stop and think about it.

Edit: And in Messi’s case, as if earning €76 per minute wasn’t enough, he also committed tax fraud.
