The dean of the abbey, the Very Rev Dr John Hall, has responded by saying that “the service will be neither one of thanksgiving nor in any way a celebration of nuclear armaments”. However, invitations have described the event as a “national service of thanksgiving” and the Royal Navy has badged it as a way to “celebrate 50 years of success of [the] Navy’s ultimate mission”.

huh!

Huh?

For me it is incredulous that organised religion appears to show absolutely no connection with what it preaches and this and appears not to understand why anyone would be bothered by it.

What's yours BP?

When politicians don't listen community activism is the best way

''Protesters are planning to stage a “die-in” outside Westminster Abbey on Friday during a service they say amounts to “a bizarre celebration” of the 50th anniversary of Britain’s continuous nuclear deterrent''

Organised religion (of any denomination) can do one for me.

Its not the Dark Ages any more and people don't need to be kept in check by fear of a higher power.

The irony is that nuclear weapons have saved a hell of alot more times than killed.
We would have had ww3 a long time ago without them, and probably ww3, ww5, ww6.......

Perhaps the church is showing how grown up it can be in recognising the peace dividend that mutually assured mass destruction has delivered for the last 70 years.

That sound exactly like something jesus would say?

You know what gets me about proponents of nuclear weapons?

It's a no-lose bet.

While ever there's peace, you can say, "There you go. MAD=Peace."

When it breaks down, there'll be no-one around to call you out.

And I say that as a proponent of nuclear arms.

Too true, Billy.  MAD works only whilst those with their fingers on the button have all of the right character traits to understand the responsibility they hold.  Unfortunately there are now a few who seem to be lacking in that department.

If nuclear weapons are so vital for keeping the peace why are they trying to stop North Korea having them?

So are all you people who are against nuclear weapons telling me that between 1945 and the present day there would have been no major war between East and West without them as a safeguard? They can't be un-invented can they?
You should be more concerned about the real threat to everyone's health pose by 5G.

You can say the same about the EU.

Would you trust that regime to behave responsibly with such power at their fingertips?

In my younger days I was an active member of CND. Unfortunately, I think that ship has sailed and we are pretty much stuck with nuclear weapons. However, I’d find it hard to argue with the fact that they have probably prevented wars in the years since 1945.

That's the point. I don't think anyone really wants them but they have done what they were supposed to do.

We appear to trust Putin, Trump, Netanyahu and the Pakistani government that hid Bin Laden!

So are you saying that it is not nuclear weapons that keep the world safe but responsible governments/leaders?

If i'd been in charge of the Soviet Union in the cold war era and nuclear weapons didn't exist I would have put the West to the sword once and for all.

I don't fully trust any of them which is exactly why I wouldn't want any more members joining this particular club. The more countries that have access to it increases the chance of accidents or terrorism in my view.

Easy, if they have them, and have the cabability to deliver them, it is a leveller. Then nk can demand to be taken seriously, and have sanctions dropped etc.
Pretty much what they do then, they can do with impunity

The EU failed to predict what Russia would do. That doesn't make it responsible for Russia's actions.
