Form Or Fortuity?
« on February 12, 2020, 01:19:28 pm by Bentley Bullet »
Is there really such a thing as 'form'? Is 'on form' actually mistaken for teams having a period of luck being on their side, and 'off-form' a period of bad luck?

I ask because if the last couple of Rovers' performances were a sign of 'on form' I wouldn't fancy seeing us 'off form'!

I would think that most observers judge a team’s “form” on the actual results rather than the quality of each performance..

If you look at performances you could equally argue we were unlucky vs Rochdale with the non-penalty.  Sure we weren’t guaranteed to score from the spot, but we would have all been happy with 3 wins on the bounce..

Football is a game where judgement of performances can’t just be done on goals alone. Winning games doesn’t really indicate form in the short term.

Wouldn't that indicate that Rochdale had a spot of good luck rather than them being classed as on 'decent form' following their draw with us?

Form isn’t just judged over the one game though..

Rochdale May have been lucky to get a draw, but I don’t know what their form is over a period of time.

I disagree. Form IS judged on one game. If a team wins 5 games on the trot, they are classed as on good form. If they lose their next game it is said their run of form is over.

But wouldn’t that depend on the next game.? Win that and the defeat was just a blip during a run of good form.?

IMHO it’d best to quantify form over a set period of games, say a minimum of 5.?

Good form for me is teams over a run of games who can find a way to win, or not to lose, even when things aren't necessarily flowing on the pitch and find themselves under pressure.

Rotherham have found their form and are very capable of winning ugly. It's what they do. If in doubt, get it forward quickly, fight for it, get it into the box, strike at the first opportunity. Spoil, timewaste, be nasty when they have to.

The question is, is it form or fortuity?

Form is temporary...…..Class is permanent
