Ultimate Cult Hero - Eliminator #3: The Keepers
« on April 23, 2020, 06:33:14 pm by RoversAlias »
Right then, last one for today as we choose between four goalkeepers from Rovers' past with one advancing to the last 16.

Keepers by their nature tend to be big characters so no surprise we got a good few nominations, so I've grouped four together for this one - remember we are looking for the one who best fits the description of a club "cult hero" rather than choosing who was necessarily the best player!

Three days to vote on this one, so you have until Sunday!

Andy Rhodes !!!!! Wasn’t there a rumour about him walking in the changing room and asking what’s the Barnsley score when we had just got beat and Cusack pinning him against the wall

Never saw Denis Peacock,  but seeing as
'easy for Denis'  has become a phrase ingrained in me , there's only one winner for me.

Denis was a good keeper for years but I always thought that both Andy Rhodes and Willie Boyd were bigger characters

Same here. I vividly remember it being explained to Andy Beasley in his first match why he had to wave when the crowd sang 'Dennis Dennis give us a wave'

Andy Beesley was a keeper I always thought deserved more plaudits than he got. His name rarely comes up in discussions.

I voted for Willie Boyd as he was the keeper in the goal for my first game in 1980 - he was courageous, throwing himself at the feet of the forwards - he wasn’t very tall and had to make up for his lack of inches with guts - I also saw Willie’s last match for Rovers which I think was a defeat in the Milk Cup away at Mansfield -

I saw a lot more of big Dennis than I did Willie, Dennis was good in his second spell at the club although not as good as he was first time round but I never saw any football in the 70’s - Andy Rhodes was extremely agile, he could walk on his hands and also saw him do hand clapping press ups which was outrageous as I’d never seen anyone do that before - Mark ‘Sammy’ Samways was an keeper who had plenty of agility too - what really hampered his game was the back pass rule he was very one footed (his left) but found it difficult clearing the ball upfield with either foot.

**** we also had another keeper on our books in the early 80’s Steve Humphries - brother of Glenn - now an interesting fact about Steve Humphries was that he was short sighted which is a significant handicap to a goalkeeper - the issue was he couldn’t see the ball if someone had shot from distance & only noticed it when it nestled in the net behind him - he played 13 times for us before his handicap was discovered.
