Very sad news.
Des O Connor as well today passes on.

Always remember Liverpool at Anfield playing careless hands sung by Des O Connor, at half time against Leeds United.
Gary Sprake my childhood goalkeeping hero ( as I was a goal keeper ) had accidentally thrown the ball over his left shoulder into the net, when he changed his mind at last second about throwing the ball out to Paul Reaney.

I think Ray Clemence by co incidence was in goal for Liverpool.

Just checked and it was Tommy Lawrence in goal
09/12/67
Liverpool 2 Leeds 0

The Kop started singing Des O Connors song Careless Hands according to the info i have just dug up. I always thought they played it over the tannoy at half time.
Maybe they did, as well as the Kop singing it.

There was only one proper Kop. So quick to pick up on something and the sound of you will never walk alone, will always remain something special.

Now they have Klopp instead of a proper Kop.  :chair:

Funnily enough the pensioner pleasing crooner was very nearly a pro footballer as well. On Northampton Town's books as a youngster, but never made the first team.
RIP to both.

... AND of course I just have to go back to what would have been THE Cup upset of all time as we drew 2-2 at Anfield

All goals scored by Doncaster players (Kevin Keegan (2) - Rovers rock bottom of Div 4 and LFC top of Div One

90 minutes on clock and Peter Kitchen 30 yards out and falling forwards lobs the ball towards goal. Clemence was nowhere near it and it seemed to be in the air an age. It fell on top of the bar.

I always say Mike Elwiss ran in but Emlyn Hughes was "smart" and with a hand on each shoulder outjumped Elwiss and headed it out for a corner

The biggest Giant killing ever was not to be and LFC won the Cup with Bill Shankly saying we were the toughest opposition they had faced
Will be good to see how my memory has done - but 2 facts - PK hit the bar - and Rovers were in that fantastic never to be repeated African Violet kit
(Fact checked the last 2 - cleared of innacuracies apart from never to be repeated as that calls for speculation lol)

Regarding Ray Clemence

Only saw him in real life once

That was against Rovers in the FA Cup in 1974

A great experience although he was very lucky when Kitchen hit the bar and the ball rebounded of the bar into his hands (or thats what I thought I remembered)

(Old Timers disease strikes again)

Would have been the shock result of all time for me

Rovers bottom of the then Division 4 and Liverpool top of the then League one

On another point I went with a mate to the game and he bought the tickets------in the main stand in the middle of all the Liverpool fans.

When the second goal went in to give us a 2-1 lead we both jumped up cheering ---then remembered where we were and sat down quickly.

A couple of old timers were sat beside us and said " don't worry lads you deserve it". At half time they took us down to the kiosks and got both us two Coffees and a pie each.

Say what you like about Liverpool fans I will never forget their friendliness, good heartedness and generosity

Didn't he play against us in 1966 at the Old Showground?
I think that it might have been Alick's first game back after the car crash.
It was a freezing Friday night. We lost 2-1 and I went straight from work on the train. To cap it all I was full of cold and left my scarf on the train.
Another miserable night.

R. I. P. Ray. I saw him play for Scunny at Belle Vue sometime in 66/67. We won 3 -0 with Alan Warboys on the scoresheet. I think Graham Taylor and KK were in the Scunny team.

Hi Ray

I tried looking back through history on here because I was corrected once when I said it was Hughes who held down Elwiss and headed it out for a corner

The bloke at the time said I was wrong and named another player so doind a search I found this from Yorkshire Post where they say right at the end it was Alec Lindsay who cleared it off the line.

I dont think that is how it happened - it did involve someone holding down ME - and I am as sure as I am of anything these days Clemence didnt catch it.

I could still be wrong as the other day I spent hours unable to remember my near neighbours first name lol

No problem SS - I wasnt meaning after that day though

It was a nod to the fact that every time we get to vote on second or third kits African Violet (the most iconic Kit for those of a certain age) never gets a look in - and so "never to be repeated" is correct in the context I was trying to use it in

Would love to see it given one more blast !

Played before I was born so I never saw him in action.

I did stand next to him on the Main Stand Terrace watching England U17s at OBV.
He was a very nice and I remember him taking time to speak to us.

Very unlucky because he was class and unlucky in that with Peter Shilton around (who got 100+ caps of course) RC would have got many many more than he did

Compared to now we had an embarrassment of riches in Goalkeeper choices

I had my African Violet away shirt design shortlisted for the final vote a few years ago, when a certain someone’s grandfather won..  I think I got 9% of the votes.  Voter fraud maybe.??

Anyway, RIP Ray, another great gone..

That game is mentioned in a great obituary for Clemence published in today's Times, Rich. Clemence recalled the Belle Vue match, which was on May 5, 1967. He said that all three Rovers goals had been his fault, and that he was devastated because he knew Bill Shankly was in the stands watching him! So that summer he worked stacking deckchairs at Skegness, thinking his big chance had gone! I recall the game well, because it was a rare win for us in that horrendous season. Also, it was one of Warboys early games for us.

Take it to the Supreme Court. You were cheated out of a trip to errr... wherever it was. But clearly the website never allowed most of your supporters to vote. Allegedly.

Hi Alonzo

Can you "rule" on the aftermath of Kitch hitting the Bar at Anfield please ?

We have in no particular order

It bounced back into Clemences hands

Alec Lindsay kicked it off the line

Mike Elwis ran in to get it but Emlyn Hughes had a hand on each shoulder and headed it out for a corner

Mike Elwis ran in to get it but (enter name here) had a hand on each shoulder and headed it out for a corner

Hi DW strange how the memory works and your dead right.

Not often I'm right--but I'm wrong again

This from the match report from the Daily Express (I believe)

"It had to be a goal of great quality to get Liverpool back in the running--and it came in the 57th minute.

And again it was Kevin Keegan's head, following a centre by Callaghan, that did it.

Still Doncaster would not surrender and in the last few moments Kitchen hit the bar and full back Alex Lindsay cleared of the line."

Hi Ray

I still stick Donny-doggedly to Mike Elwiss being held down with a hand on each shoulder by "mr x" who headed it out for a corner

LOL I am so sure - just a pity we cant get a You tube. I am sure also that the match report from Paper with Terry Curran has been on here. Sure I have a couple of reports cut out of a Paper as well

Will search again

I went to the horses mouth for a reply - after all this bloke had the view of all views and here is his reply

Peter Kitchen
@orientlegend
Replying to
@Canals1de
 and
@JLloydWebber

In the last minute, I was chasing the aimless through ball and as Hughes and Clemence hesitated, I got in between both to toe poke the ball up and over Ray, the ball hit the top of the crossbar, it bounced again, but as it was dropping Hughes got back and headed out for a corner.
8:35 pm · 16 Nov 2020·Twitter Web App

I thanked him and said " that was my memory too" but I had EH holding down Mike Elwiss as well with a hand on each shoulder

Ive got this far - so I may as well get full proof LOL
