We're not out of the woods yet. New cases appear to be on the rise again.

We're getting towards the backend now, soon be St Leger time, kids going back to school, cooler weather. The conditions look right for more difficulties.

It will be flu this winter no doubt. After virtually no flu deaths last winter (allegedly)

I think we'd only see a big resurgence in flu if people returned to their normal habits.

So far I don't think we're seeing it. There's still a lot of mask wearing going on, hand sanitizer being used regularly, working from home, eating outside or using takeaways and the avoidance of crowded indoor spaces.

When the booster jabs for the over 50s roll out, it will come with a flu jab in the other arm.

I reckon the flu will still be held down.

Thank goodness Boris was confident that the conforming public would show common sense without having to introduce a nanny state.

Thank goodness many amongst the general public have more sense than Johnson.

Covid infections haven't really gone below 20,000 a day and are now on the rise again. With some nanny state left in place, we would have done better than this and the NHS would be in a better position for the coming Autumn.

So you really, REALLY think anti-Boris people would have stuck to a Boris lead nanny state?

the t number is now 0.8 to 1.1 and hospitalisations are reducing, you not long ago said the numbers were going to be terrible woukd you agree that? Everytime the numbers slightly rise you blaming the government, at the start of the pandemic yes the government made mistakes since just after Xmas your predictions rd have been completely wrong but still you keep going on about rising cases

The more cases now, the better it will be come winter, as more people will have antibodies. That's why we're open now to get it out of the way.

I thought the numbers would be terrible because the government told me to expect them to be terrible and their scientists suggested they could be twice as bad as that.

As it is they've only been moderately bad, a result the government weren't anticipating.

The current r number is based on numbers from two to three weeks ago according to gov.uk.

The daily numbers we have seen over the last 5 days suggest that is changing now as raw figures coming in are 2,000 - 3,000 greater than they were the previous week. It suggests the r number has begun to rise again.

That makes me suspect we aren't out of the woods yet.

Edit. My opinion is we have a dangerous virus circulating and the more we can do to reduce it the better, for a few reasons. That's why I think the government are still wrong to make mask wearing a matter of personal choice in settings like shops. It's a simple precaution for the good of all that doesn't affect economic activity.

I reckon the flu will still be held down.

Regarding the booster jabs, RD, some scientists are now saying that shouldn't be happening, as the benefits won't outweigh the need to supply some poorer countries with the vaccines.

There's a lot of merit in that approach Steve, apart from being humanitarian it reduces the risk of another worse variant.
