MPs, they're all the same?
« on November 03, 2021, 10:43:32 pm by SydneyRover »
Why do people say this, surely it would take the same amount of effort to find the they are not all the same, they are people after all people and all people are patently not the same, so why is this hackneyed old saw still used.

They are all the same in the sense that when they make a mistake or have done something they shouldn't and the world and his wife is aware that that they made a mistake or done something they shouldn't, they still don't admit it.

It is as if they somehow think that nobody has noticed. A form of denial.

I do find this weird about politicians when in many cases holding their hands up and admitting they made a cock up or bad decision BEFORE they have actually been found out would probably enhance their standing.

As it is, they lie about lying.

I always find it’s those who have been lied too and won’t admit it who call them all the same, and more specifically …. liars.  Its the only defence left when faced with the realisation that they have been duped.

One of the greatest scenes in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is when George Smiley explains to Toby Esterhase that the latter has been played by a high level mole.

Smiley: Ever buy a fake painting Toby?
Esterhase: Sold a few George...
Smiley: Thing is. The more you pay for it, the less inclined you are to question its authenticity.

There's a lot of that going on in UK politics these days.

The collective term 'nasty party' (haven't seen tory scum used collectively but likely it has) is just that, a collective term for a party that makes decision that benefit the few (themselves and donors) rather than the many, (PPE?) which is why you would think they are desperately trying to talk about levelling up-or not. If they were a party for the 'many' this wouldn't be unnecessary on such a scale.

The same reasoning could be applied across all the current problems the UK is dealing with. NHS funding and privatisation creep, lack of funding in lga's, social disorder, lack of the right people in the police force, the list goes on. Privatisation of natural monopolies ..........

Whereas the term 'they are all the same' reflects on individual MPs, take away the MP bit and you have a person, which I referred to in my OP, one person is not the same as another, obviously.

Here are some examples of 'persons' not being the same:

the Owen Patterson affair

''Scores of Tory MPs declined to back the prime minister, however, with several saying they had been deluged by angry messages from constituents''

''One Tory, Angela Richardson, MP for Guildford since 2019 and an aide to Michael Gove, confirmed she had departed from her role as a parliamentary aide after her decision to abstain. She tweeted: “I abstained … aware that my job was at risk, but it was a matter of principle for me.”

For those of you that have not studied or read psychology, I can see some of this in some of our politicians. On both sides.
The Stanford Prison Experiment is cited as evidence of the atavistic impulses that lurk within us all; it's said to show that, with a little nudge, we could all become tyrants

I refuse to believe all Tories are bad people.

Take Ken Clarke. Yes, he was part of Thatchers governmwnt but really he believes in the power of economic growth to make people's lives better. He used to say he would look around and if he saw plenty of cranes he was happy. That was how he judged his performance.

Unfortunately all that economic growth like that, building concrete buildings is ruining the atmosphere...
