Trackless Buses
« on November 15, 2021, 07:03:29 am by Donnywolf »
Commented on HS2 thread just now about Trackless Buses

Found great article with photos / routes etc. I wondered why they went out of service and the report says the all electric / almost silent / cheap mass transport system was withdrawn due to diesel engines making travel "cheaper"

How BLOODY ironic

What are your memories of "Trackies"

I think a modern trackless might work really well and be cost effective.

Today it could look more like an electric bus with batteries but charging wires all through town. This would allow it to drive out into the country, get a charge in the villages before returning. It would also mean there's no need for complex wire junctions or systems going under bridges and such.

No need for expensive railways and it would give operators a degree of flexibility for routes.

I thought SS and BB met on a Doncaster tram when it first opened.

Doncaster Corporation Tramways was an electric tramway network serving the town of Doncaster, England.

Aren't they on about potentially extending the Sheffield tram to Donny and the airport?

I believe the ambition is to extend the tram-train service up to Donny, so it would use the existing heavy rail line. Whether it would replace existing rail services, or mean a slower service, with more capacity, I don't know.

It should do you are paying for it on your rates and have been since it opened in spite of you having no service in Doncaster.

Electric with induction loops at every stop and terminal to keep them charged?
