Commented on HS2 thread just now about Trackless Buses

Found great article with photos / routes etc. I wondered why they went out of service and the report says the all electric / almost silent / cheap mass transport system was withdrawn due to diesel engines making travel "cheaper"

I think a modern trackless might work really well and be cost effective.

Today it could look more like an electric bus with batteries but charging wires all through town. This would allow it to drive out into the country, get a charge in the villages before returning. It would also mean there's no need for complex wire junctions or systems going under bridges and such.

No need for expensive railways and it would give operators a degree of flexibility for routes.

I thought SS and BB met on a Doncaster tram when it first opened.

I believe the ambition is to extend the tram-train service up to Donny, so it would use the existing heavy rail line. Whether it would replace existing rail services, or mean a slower service, with more capacity, I don't know.
