The greatest jockey has died.
Along with Willie Nimmo, my childhood hero.
Spoke to him at Donny races a couple of years ago and despite his taciturn reputation, he was surprisingly friendly.

RIP Lester.

I once won a Viking FM phone in competition while at work

Each week they did a best Anagram from name of someone in the news

Think it was when he had been done on the tax charge .... and I thought it will be LP today

I managed Got St Leger tip out of his name ... phoned my dad and said ring em if it is LP and it was.

He got on first and despite a few other good ones I won

So good old  ..... Got St Leger tip

Without doubt the greatest jockey the world has ever seen. I would also rate him as one of the top sportsmen ever.
To have a career as long as he did was unbelievable, living on coffee and cigars, continually wasting to keep his weight down has taken its toll on many other jockeys, Fred Darling being the prime example having taken his own life.
Given a prison sentence for tax evasion and stripped of his OBE he was definitely made an example off, how many other people have lost their honours despite having a criminal record.
I saw him ride for a good chunk of his career and was in awe of his outstanding horsemanship, I will never forget him riding 5 winners at Pontefract one Friday night as me and my dad backed them all.

RIP Lester

He cost me and a mate £1200 way back when. We had a system and it was working and had Yankees usually

One day first 3 came in and in very last Race at Chepstow (about 21 15)  David Dandy Nichols was due to ride St Benet's . He got stuck in traffic and LP took the ride and lost by width of a fag paper.

Those in the know said Dandy would have won but who knows. We got £200 and I said to mate whatever you do NEVER ever tell me what we would have won !

An hour later I said ok tell me pls. He said just under £1500

RIP LP (one of the greats of course)
