Turkey - Syria earthquake
« on February 09, 2023, 07:01:43 am by ncRover »
Poor souls.

Those with no home or shelter are out in the cold with night time temperatures of -7.

£30 could provide blankets for six people to keep them warm

£50 could provide emergency food for two families for 10 days

£100 could provide emergency shelter for four families.

Here’s a link to the disasters emergency committee page to donate. With the UK government matching the first £2 million.

Rebel areas includes a wide range. Depends as well what was targetted. Islamist extremists, not really "rebel" is more accurate.

It's beyond horrific. I know people, strong, hard people, who have experienced magnitude 6.5 earthquakes and they say it is the most frightening thing they ever knew and left them emotionally scarred.

To experience a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, lose kids and partners and parents and THAN after all that, have to exist in freezing conditions  without shelter, water or power because the scale of the recovery work is so enormous...I can barely begin to think about it without wanting to break down in tears.

Poor, poor people. I hope the wealthy countries step up to help these people survive and rebuild their lives.

Scary to think that a 7.5 is x10 stronger than a 6.5 then.

I notice Erdogan bully boys have moved into he region, and are trying to Gloss things over, interrupting news reporters and the like, it's a pity politics has started to take a grip.
What's the crack with him ,is he trying to cover up the full picture of the devastation?

Intriguing to see what the initial response to this disaster will be from the leading western nations, it looks like all the NGO's are ramping up to meet this head on but its been very muted from the US, UK, and French governments.

Should we be reading into this that they want to draw pressure onto Erdoğan and al-Assad?

I'd say there's a time and place for everything, but just now is not it for these poor people.

Erdogan has already made it political, he’s refused aid from Cyprus, along with Assad bimbing rebel areas affected by the earthquake, they are both using people suffering to their own gain
