Missing sub.

What a terrifying way to go, roughly 20 hours of oxygen left, poor buggers.

They might not have to suffer that, Andy, they might have gone so deep that the vessel imploded with pressure.

I first read/heard about his & thought “Why?” Why would you pay nearly £200,000 to get inside a submersible that has room for only four other people then submerge 2 miles through ever darkening waters in order to reach a wreck (yes I appreciate its not any old wreck) which takes two & a half hours to reach, you then have three hours to photograph the wreck (photographs that you can see in far greater detail in the safety of your own home on the internet) before you have to make the two & a half hour return to the surface because you only have eight hours of air before you’re in ‘trouble’?

No back up rescue vessels ‘just in case’ something goes wrong, no contingencies in place…..frightening.

This was a tragic, ill thought out ‘tourist trip’.

I hope for the best but felt the worst the minute I heard the news.

You wouldn’t get me in that submersible for any amount of money let alone pay for the ‘experience’.

I hope they’re all found alive & well.

Ive always had a huge interest in the Titanic, since we learned about at school, the year Ballard found it, think it was 1985.

That said there is no way on earth i would get into one of those subs even if you paid me. Looks to me its operated by an x box game controller!

Id always thought after watching the film "raise the titanic" where there is a scene where one of the subs imploded, if it might ever happen for real.

Certainly looks that way now.

I think we also have to look at the makeup of some of the people on the craft, to become a billionaire you have to have a certain outlook in life, in effect you will be looking at problems and issues as something to be rectified and worked on to improve or innovate, people like this don't see the world through "our average Joe" eyes but as an opportunity to develop and make something of.

The world would be a far duller and backward place if we didn't have people with this mindset. Mankind has the potential for greatness but with the destructive potential of a nuke.

Hope for the best for them but fearing the worst.

Colin, you might ask why do people climb Everest when they can see pictures of the summit on the internet.
Some people like high risk adventures and they are prepared for the buzz of going where not many people can.
Like yourself, I just hope that they make it back okay.

The tragedy is that the Titanic will claim even more lives 111 years after it sunk .

Let's hope not .

Totally different scenarios hound.

I can watch pictures of the summit of Everest & of expeditions still climbing it because man went & still goes there.

The pictures of The Titanic I’ve seen thus far were taken by remote submersible’s unless I’m very much mistaken. Even if these submersible’s were manned they would have had huge ‘back up’ vessels & rescue plans in place.

These poor souls were literally bolted into this thing & did so willingly.

I fear they were being bolted into what will become their coffin & unless this thing imploded or crashed & was breached & sank, they face a horrible end.

Give me an exploding rocket on take off into the universe.

Oh I agree that they are different scenarios Colin but the point I was putting over is that they are adventurers and do stuff like that for the thrill of doing it.
They may well die but so do many mountain climbers.

The absolute disregard, in fact eschewing, of safety by the operator is going to be the focus when this is inevitably a maritime disaster.

Even if they're found now, how on Earth would they get them back to the surface?

No manned submersible should be going down there without an umbilical cord

Even if they're found now, how on Earth would they get them back to the surface?

... and if they have managed to surface by releasing weights and skids etc it would still be difficult to locate them and WORSE they can't open the hatch to freedom as it is bolted from the outside

You couldn't pay me enough to get into that death trap, never mind me paying 250k for the privilege. Darwinism in action. Hard for me to have sympathy with the billionaires using what is essentially a deep-sea mass grave to get their dark tourism kicks to be honest. If there is one silver lining to all this it's that it might get people to leave the thing alone at last.

Tragedy.

Last week nearly 500 hundred died near the coast of Greece.
Today at least 30 near Tenerife.
Not as much coverage,or as many comments about that.
Humanity is well and truly f£@ked up.

The search and rescue attempts were heavily involved from where I live. The sub went out from our harbour. Lots and lots of media over here.
