Has anyone ever….
« on June 02, 2024, 04:30:17 pm by tommy toes »
Almost ripped off their big toenail.
Did this tipping up an old armchair.
Must have got the end of it caught on summat.
Blood everywhere and it’s loose most of the way down but not at the near end.I’ve bandaged it up for now.
Don’t know whether to try and remove it or leave it and see what happens.
Any advice?

Keep it clean, but chances are it will drop off of its own accord soon enough, assuming the nail is intact and not torn?

Happened to me as a kid.  At school our main PE sport was rugby, but occasionally we would be sent on a cross country run.  I wasn’t much of a runner, but I didn’t mind, however this was always done in my rugby boots.  One time, during the run, I lost one of the studs which happened to be more or less under my right big toe.

Limped back to school to find a massive bruise coming up under the nail.  Sure enough a couple of days later the whole thing dropped off, albeit cleanly.

Thankfully, unlike losing a toe, it will grow back.!

Thanks IDM. Didn’t fancy pulling it off. I’ll wait and see.
It’s not torn and has gone black.

TT, many years ago playing football someone stood very heavily on my big toenail.
It also went black and fell off a while later.
A new one grew in its place.
It won’t hurt once the pain has gone.  ;)

Funnily enough hound, it’s not painful at all now, but it was at the time.
I hope it does drop off as you say.
Thanks.

I did the same thing, Tommy, a few years back. As it was stuck up, I cut half of it off with the scissors, so it wouldn't catch on anything.

The rest of it dropped off as the new nail grew.

It'll be alright, mate.

Got 2 ginormous blood blisters years ago - one under each big toenail from a new pair of football boots. After a couple of months I realised I hadn't had to cut these nails since but had my other toenails as normal. After some gentle pulling on them I realised I had two half nails already growing underneath and the dead ones were pulled out with a stiff upper lip. As others have said, just trim the dead one as needed and it should be ok.

I've ripped both off at some point. I'd cut it off personally, but depends on where it's joined to the toe.

First time I did it, I'd been sat on my leg with my foot in the covers. Foot went numb, got up and felt dizzy and sick walking down the stairs. Didn't feel a thing initially but I was in agony when the feeling came back. Only realised when I looked down to see the entire nail missing...
