Jones is the better to keep as a bench warmer he is the home grown player the squad needs for strength of depth on bench

Raven, are you serious?!

Welcome to our club. I agree that Jones should be number 2.

I don’t think players need to be homegrown by us just homegrown in this country. I’m pretty sure we meet that quota easily. Someone please clarify

McCann keeping his cards close to his chest that this gives us great competition with 4 keepers on the books.

But surely one goes out now.

I believe there are two categories of player - 'Home Grown' and 'Club Developed'. There have to be a number of 'Home Grown and indeed that is simply nationality qualification. But there also needs to be one 'Club Developed' player in the match day squad of 18, and for us that means has played in one of our club's youth teams. Jones qualifies, but apart from him we only have Goodman, Kuleya, and I think De Gruchy as well as the current youth players including Oram, Allen, Flint and Straugham- Brown. So keeping Jones (or Oram) in the 18 would effectively allow one extra senior outfield player.

Thank you DU.

Would Jay McGrath qualify as ‘club developed’ due to starting out at the club as a youngster?

Being slightly honest I am a little underwhelmed by this signing.

Being totally honest I am gutted that we aren't after TLT permanent.

BUT Grant starts by saying he believes we have signed one of the best up and coming keepers in England.

So, in GM I trust.

He describes himself primarily as box dominating. For me that’s the most important quality that sets a goalkeeper apart. I hope he’s as good as his word there. I do have some trepidation that it’s a risk given lack of senior experience, but let’s hope it pays off. It’s such a key position for us and he has big gloves to fill after TLT went back.

Agree with all that especially regards box dominating and big gloves to fill!!!

Our current crop are NOT box dominating which has been the issue.

Going on GM’s interview, he said Oram will probably be going out on a development loan to gain experience. As for the other 2, I can’t see both hanging around, but who knows!

As for TLT, I would have loved him back here, but hasn’t he gone on record as wanting a Club L1 or higher? Obviously his short stay here has given him the confidence to seek a higher grade of football.

How anyone can be underwhelmed is beyond me, as we’ve not seen him perform yet. That’s the only way to form any opinion - go watch him for a few games and then let’s see.

In his interview he says one of his strengths in taking control of his box, so that’s a good place to start. His next thing was his distribution and he says he’s good in that area and a good shot-stopper. Sounds ok, so now we just need to see him put those things into practice!

Of course we can be underwhelmed or overwhelmed by a signing, that's the whole point BEFORE you see them????

Then you can make a proper judgement when you see them????

I hope the kid is amazing and I trust in GM. I will find out a few games in.

TLT has made it clear that he doesn't see his future here, whether we try to buy him or not. He's wanting to push himself into the Hull City first team and, given they're selling off 2 keepers this Summer, he's a reasonable chance.

Neither really, but Jones is a conference north keeper at best.  I wish him well in the future. Great shot stopper but lacks a presence and his distribution is poor.

So for me Lawlor

GM Has a real eye for a player but i was really shocked when we signed Lawlor back, To say he had spent most of his youth working with the best goalkeeping coaches money can buy at Man City I though he was very poor for us. And his career has been nothing special wherever he ended up since he left.

He also didn't really impress me on his return before he got injured and I suspect the upgrade when TLT came in has convinced GM that maybe bringing him back was a mistake. However as the saying goes, you don't knock a coconut down everytime.

This is the second time I’ve seen this. I don’t know what people are basing this off!

He is deficient in other areas such as crosses and set pieces, but Louis Jones has good distribution.

The stats say Jones actually claims more high balls than Lawlor.

1.01 per 90 compared to Lawlor’s 0.52 per 90.

It’s actually Lawlor who is the marginally better shot stopper according to the stats.

Lawlor shot save percentage 63%
Jones shot save percentage 60 %

Lawlor will be happy to stay as a no.2 at this level. But I doubt Jones will.

Obviously the stats say TLT was better in all aspects though, and that ultimately kept the clean sheets and pushed us on.

It's based on what I see.

Everyone have good distribution, it's consistency that is key.

The young keeper we have can go out on loan to non-league somewhere, it will do him good, Lawlor I would pay off, and then we are left with an England standard goalie and one who is adequate but not quite good enough.

Re: the England standard goalie, Joe Bursik had a really strong career with the England age group set-ups and I really didn't rate him for us. In hindsight though he was streets ahead of Dahlberg, Mitchell etc so perhaps I was a bit harsh on him!

I'm wary about TSL's lack of first team experience - he started Bromley's first game last year, was out of the squad for the next 2 (injury?) and then on the bench for 21 of the last 26 games - but he sounds like he's got good attributes so hopefully he solves the issue that we have there.

He’s 21 and is good enough to have played for England 6 times at  U 16, U 17 and U 20 levels.

It’s been explained why Bromley didn’t use him and we might question their judgment, but really does anyone have any evidence that he is not a good prospect?

I should say that we are lucky he has chosen us.

Another great signing. Well we hope it is.
I am sure they will have done plenty of homework on him.

Jones needs to go out to a National league club and get lots of games under his belt.
That’s the only way he will improve and give himself a chance of being a good enough keeper to play as a number 1 at a league 1 club or even at League 2 level.

There used to be “Assertiveness Courses”. A modern equivalent for goalkeepers would be a good idea for him. I’m sure more confidence would improve his performance overall.

Wouldnt class that as good distribution, he was just forced to punt it up field with no real thought behind it.
