The Mike Jeffrey signing
« on August 23, 2024, 02:52:05 pm by Branton Rover »
This is when we were properly skint. When Mike came to us from Bolton the fee was £10k and I think I’m right in saying the players dad picked up the tab for this. Quite remarkable really when you think about it. My question is can anyone recalling this sort of thing happening elsewhere, or are we unique in asking the players dad to pay the transfer fee?

I’m sure we chipped in previously to pay towards wages ….then again I may imagined that

I couldn’t believe we’d signed a striker who was that good! Instant hero.

He was absolutely class for us.

I saw him playing for Grimsby against crewe once, Colin cramb played for crewe as well but both were crap.

Superb player for us at a time when we didn't have many.

He ended up playing for Newcastle in the UEFA Cup.

He was an outstanding player. Certainly the best player I've seen wear a Rovers shirt pre Championship years and would give most of those players a run for their money as well.

Interesting link between those two players - they both played for Fortuna Sittard in the Netherlands. Sittard is a small place near Maastricht, but have been in the Dutch Eredivisie for much of their history. I lived close by for 7 years, but not while Cramb or Jeffrey were playing

Edit: Was just looking at Cramb's wiki and it is suggesting he is the only player to play in all for of the top Divisions in England and Scotland

I was at the Belle Vue with my mate the afternoon Jeffrey signed, Beaglehole came over and told us the news, he was ecstatic, as were we! Mobile phones were just for yuppies then and the carrier pigeons were on strike so got the bus back to Edenthorpe and walked around each Rovers fan’s house to tell them the tremendous news, luckily there were only five in the village then.

Didn't we have him on loan first? I'm sure we was near the bottom and he helped us hit some decent form. Pretty sure there was a Warboys playing as well. We then signed him that summer and then keegan came knocking but he was up against Cole and the others they had at the time. Think he went to Rotherham but never hit the form he did when playing in the hoops.

Sure they got local businesses to sponsor the fee, £20k springs to mind for some reason. Gavin Worboys will be who you are thinking of

That's the one. He wasn't very old if memory is right. I remember oo ee Jeffery scoring away at Scarborough. I had the match winner away top. Sold it to someone on here a few years ago. My favourite away top that design. Was still in good condition as well 25 years or so on.

Top striker was Jeffrey, up there in the top 3 I've ever seen play for us.

Had the gift of slowing time and space in the penalty area, like something out of the matrix.

Graham Jones didn't like him though eh.

The goal he scored away at Rotherham in one of his first games as class, the away end at Millmoor erupted.
Never seen a video of the goal since

My mate tripped down the terracing on his way to the front to celebrate with the players and almost got trampled to death.
