Time Wasting from Throw Ins
« on January 25, 2025, 06:47:42 pm by sedwardsdrfc »
Is this a tactic we’ve been employing at home? God we were slow today. I know Harrogate we’re time wasting but I think we beat them at dragging throw ins out.

I heard it’s from some St George’s coaching manual that taking them quick can lead to possession turnover. Fair enough if you’re playing Liverpool but at home we should be taking a few more risks to score. No wonder we struggle to score.

Maxwell in particular always takes an age to take a throw in.

Not as long as their full back did

Their number 20 took 7 steps forward on nearly every throw in. McCann was going crazy at the 4th.

Not as long as their full back did

Agreed but they were time wasting from very early in the first half.
Maxwell always does it.

I have mentioned it lots of times on here and lamented the great Coppinger

Not just throwing's, there seems to be a lack of urgency and purpose to a lot of things we do. Molyneux took a corner at 1 point and Sbarra was stood next to him behind the goal line totally inactive, it was criminal.

We seemed to be playing the same game as them when the ball was out of play. Let’s have a breather and eek some time off the clock. It’s L2 the ball spends more time out of play than in so the least we can do is get it in quickly.

And still the ref somehow only added 3 mins on today, crazy.

Jamie Sterry does exactly the same, maybe we shouldn’t complain too loudly

We’d have been fuming had we been 1 nil down, as we were 1 up I think the ref did the right thing, he made them suffer for their time wasting.

We take ages at throw ins because we don’t have a James Coppinger to take the ball, be aware of the options before he takes it & has the guile to play out of trouble & deliver a good pass that keeps us moving forward.

The body language of the team screams ‘please not to me’.

I mentioned that further back in this thread and several times over recent months.
As Copps is still with the club and I believe, still involved in coaching, you would think he could pass on his expertise in this aspect of our play wouldn’t you.

We are sh*t with throw ins. It is so frustrating.

Cant be worked on in training. It's like nobody wants to show for the ball because they know there isn't a plan.

Or as lots would say , Harrogate were time wasting throughout the game and getting more and more slow in 2 nd half clinging to the Point that it looked like they had gained

Then we score. Goalkeepers spotting sprinting to get the ball in play. Ref gives 3 minutes and who are the beneficiaries of the added time

Answer .... The team that wasted it all throughout the game.  3 didn't seem half long enough , but there are plenty of times when a Team concedes late and then get 6 minutes to go grab a goal and it should be totally revamped

A word for the Bloke in West Stand who was bawling at 4th Official re the 1 minute of Added Time in first half

Check you Time 4th 0fficial , check your watch 4th Official , and rubbish 4th Official

I thoughtn the man and the majority of Fans must know it is the Ref that decides the Added Time ( as if he hadn't enough to do ) and then signals TO the 4th Official to display the time the Ref has deemed as time lost

Imo , neither of them should decide

There was a moment first half when the ball was slowly going out and Maxwell decided to let it roll out when he could have kept it in and played.

By the time we had taken the throw in, all their team were back in position, then followed a scrappy passage of play and it was a good 2 or 3 minutes until we got the ball back under control and ready to build again.

It just screamed lack of intensity. He could have kept it in and kept the pressure on.

Not just throwing's, there seems to be a lack of urgency and purpose to a lot of things we do. Molyneux took a corner at 1 point and Sbarra was stood next to him behind the goal line totally inactive, it was criminal.
that’s an instruction which we do a lot to make the opposition unsure whether it will be a left footer or right footer taking it.

Kick ins are already being used in the lower age groups of grassroots football.
How long before we have specialists taking kick ins in senior football who can land a ball on a six pence out of his hands 60 yards away?

That particular situation was in the SE corner and Mols placed the ball in a position where Sbarra couldn’t possibly have taken the corner kick himself because the corner flagstick prevented him being able to do so.
The ball was on the side of the quadrant that ran along the touchline.
I mentioned at the time that Sbarra was not doing anything other than just standing off the pitch.

yes we do it a lot to give an option, can always move the ball a bit if Sbarra is better to take it or gives the option to go short sometimes without the opposition having 2 players watching the short one.

Saying that tho, I’m surprised with how few short corners we have taken recently, worked so well last season but seemed to have stopped doing them.

Need to mix them up again.

It is almost as if throw-ins were not in the coaching manual !

I agree on the short corner thing BV.
We were very inventive with them and scored quite a few goals as a result of that.
