Young players
« on February 06, 2025, 09:58:50 pm by DollyRover »
Was tonight a case of too many with an eye on the palace game? Crew and kelly seemed anonymous out of possession, mcgrath and maxwell were both extremely poor. Hopefully just a blip and we can get back to a title charge after the fa cup but losing 8v2 over the season against that lot hurts and I hope mccann has them in early tomorrow to put things right

I think that game was a one off. They weren’t in it 1st half but found themselves two up.
Always gonna be hard from there.

We started tonight with Kelly and Crew in midfield. Undoubtedly good players but how have we given contracts to Clifton, Westbrooke, Close, Broadbent and Sbarra and they don’t get a look in? Odd way to spend the budget. Lot of cash going to waste.

Clifton for kelly all day long for me.

Would not of minded 1 bit if kelly was sent back.
Absolutly baffled as to why hurst has gone out on loan when he could slot into the 10 role

Love Crew's bravery on the ball , always looking for the forward pass, leap years ahead of that fraud Close

I agree we could count ourselves unlucky to go in at half time behind but the pattern of play didn't change and in fact got worse in second half. McCann has to take the blame for not changing things sooner but I just think a few have their focus on Monday. Trying to find one positive was late on seeing olowu play further forward. A couple of good balls into the box and a decent run, should have buried his header from the corner though

The midfield bossed the first half, and they shouldn’t be blamed for the absolute lack of nous or quality upfront.
Then in the second Grant was just going all out, as he does, and they got caught - and when that happens it looks shabby and as if there is no structure, but this is Grants way, he will not do damage limitation.

Ironside tonight was in the way, Street not much better although offered more than Joe. Joe was great last season but is so far from that form, it’s just odd to watch.

It just feels like if Molly doesn’t score or do something we are lost at the moment.

Defence was quite poor tonight though, and I love TSL, but some blame lies with him, he had no protection, but was beaten twice from mid range. Owolu had a bit of a dodgy first half but was better in the second, the rest will not want to watch that back again.

Yes Oluwu looked even better when he went up, which is saying something.
What a player!

It’s certainly a waste but both look an upgrade. It would be sunk cost fallacy to pick expensive, contracted players ahead of them just because they’re expensive, contracted players. We should be looking at improving our recruitment to stop it happening again, not trying to get them into the team because they’re taking up a chunk of the budget.

That said I do think Westbrooke could and should play a part but McCann clearly thinks differently.

Maxwell has been a worry defensively for a while for me.

That being said, the tactics with the full backs are high risk high reward and McCann has always been the same that way. And the right side gets more cover with Olowu’s recovery pace.

McCann didn’t do his job both tactically and in the preparation. We left too many gaps for their flare players to exploit and they didn’t know how to change when going two down . The second half was even worse and both g changed in shape or effectiveness.

There were no gaps in the first half we were camped in their half and playing very well. Second half we went for it and left gaps

Goals change games. After the third particularly, Crew for one looked a bit lost. It's obviously a new experience for him so not unexpected.

He's been nowhere near his best at all this season. Going forward he's not been great when usually is. Sterry has probably done better at that this year

Sterry is an easier target for criticism though. Hence why despite performing more consistently than Maxwell all season, he has a 4 page thread on him and the other doesn’t.

At the back our left side has been the weakness all season and the area nearly every team probe especially early in the game.

I don't understand this?

Broadband, Sbarra and Clifton have had runs to cement places but under performed, as per criticism from fans and are still used in the match squads as subs.  Westbrooke and close haven't had a look in since injuries, that's all.
The obsession with Hurst, I don't know he just isn't consistent either and defending is a none entity, being given time to hopefully enhance those areas. I think possibly there is an element of number 10 but there are also many that you could give chances in that position.

I'll just take the childish jibe. To be honest we all have no clue what has happened behind the scenes with any of them. We are in auto promotion places, I'm happy, of course at any club there are improvements to be made. I want to stay positive and not slag off our owner who at a guess has spent quite a bit of his own money this year and over many years. Well done Terry ?? ( a few more question marks for fun)

Is the question mark because you don't know whether you understand it or not?
Close obviously didn't want to come back and win the league, he prefers a southern non league atmosphere, well then what hard questions was he asked when being given a two years contract? Westbrooke injured? Really? Grant said at the beginning of November he'd been given a match off because of his wife giving birth.  No mention afterwards of him picking up an injury in training , he seems to have done a Jon Taylor and decided playings abit too much of an effort. Again what serious questions was he asked?
Broadbent was got here with a transfer fee, for what?
Sbarra is a good non league player and Clifton as good on field as either replacements signed in January.
Recruitment needs a shake up. Needs strengthening with an experienced duo with experience in that area, but that costs money and we have an owner with an aversion to that
Hilarious

We recruit good players mostly, we just have poor player profiling. Signed quite a few players that don't necessarily fit into a McCann team.

Good point that. Things don’t align.

How do you get things to align if the manager doesn’t play the style he said he would when he took over though? We are a far cry (style wise) from what we were like when he was with us previously and from what he said we would be like when he joined.

Care to expand?
Wasn't me who said at the last "Meet The Owners" that "can we do it on less money,  we think we can"

You're picking a comment out of context though....less money than who?

Are you mental, we have two players for every position, our wage bill will be amongst the biggest in the league and up there in league one too and we’ve clowns saying the owner is tight.
Absolutely crazy!
