SOD didn't enjoy it today
« on April 24, 2010, 08:19:16 pm by Barmby Rover »
Doncaster Rovers boss Sean O'Driscoll:
\"If the two teams played like that all season we'd not be in this division, we would be relegated.

\"It might have been a great spectacle for people to watch, which is fair enough at the end of the season.

\"And there was some great attacking play at times, but there was also some comical defending from both teams.\"

To be truthful he was not the only one - a win is a win but end of the day it was a poor performance.

i think thats a little harsh, it was a poor defensive performance, but i think for most of the match going forward we looked lethal.

Agreed.  It also looked like two teams freed of the shackles of the pressures of a normal Championship match.

Couldn't have summed it up better myself. As a spectator, the game was a great watch, but there really was some awful defending. After looking more comfortable against West Brom, Martis gave the sort of display he did in the Plymouth match and after some excellent showings in the centre, I thought Jimmy had a disappointing game in his preferred position.

There was also a huge vacuum in midfield once Stock went off which Scunny were able to exploit. I think Lockwood would have been a better replacement for Stock, with Hird moving into a screening role. We had that in the end, but by then Scunny had got the bit between their teeth and panic was setting in.

A win is a win, though- especially in a local derby! :cheer:

The final result was as great as the performance was poor.

Personally Im still gutted that, given the circumstances, Waide Fairhurst didnt get a bit of a run out yesterday. Where would the harm have been in giving him 25 - 30 minutes?

End of the day I think he brought McDaid and Heffs on because I think thats the last time we will see them in a Rovers Shirt and Waide will be here next season and will get involved with the 1st team!!

That might well be correct, rtid88, and something I mentioned at the time.

One last hurrah and all that.

McDaid came on?

Who was he impersonating then? Heffs, Locky or Deano?  ;)

Oops, I meant Locky.  I believe he is out of contract too.

I think we should give Locky another year. He is decent enough cover.

If we sign Shackell, would he be surplus though?

NO!  He'd be ahead of Martis for me every time.

Not sure SOD would do that though, considering we have Martis for another 2 1/2 years

Probably not, considering our record with injured centre-backs this season!!

IF we were to sign Shackell (please God, yes), then I believe it would be a choice between Lockwood and Hird. We still have Webster, don't forget, who could turn out to be better than Lockwood and Hird!

We also have to keep all 3 FB's as well (Dumbaya could go, for me, but with the budget - whatever that's going to be - probably being tight, something has to give).

Now JOC has shown himself more than capable at CB I also wonder if both Locky and Hird will be renewed. Wouldn't like to choose between them, maybe Hird for youth and the midfield cover.

For some reason I have a niggly worry about losing Gaz Roberts - I fear we may only offer him 1 year but he could easily get a 2 or 3 year deal in L1....

Agree on Roberts i think we will only offer him a year, he could well get offered more elsewhere.
Although Lockwood has never let us down i think he may well be released and Hird offered a new deal.

I think Shackell will most likely sign then we have Martis, JOC and Hird, Can't see us signing both Shackell and Ward although it would be a strong defence.

I suspect he'll be away on 2 or 3 year deal to another championship club.

Isnt Robbo in for an op in the closed season though?  His knee?

That in itself could put some potential suitors off.

I hope so, Rob. Just players like him, Copps and Jimmy- well actually all of them- have shown enough over to be considered as established championship players. They have the quality that could attract, if not the biggest clubs, then certainly those with bigger wage bills than ourselves.
I try not to worry this time of year as this is a similar scenario to last close season and, as we know, it all worked out very nicely.
I mention those 3 as I think they have had excellent campaigns or in Copps case a good end to the season and he will always offer a source of creativity that teams at this level need.
I wouldn't be surprised if he went to join his big mate, Green, at Derby or somewhere of that ilk.
This is purely idle speculation on my part and not based on anything other than how I have observed this season.
