GILLETT RETURNS TO ROVERS
Posted on: Wed 07 Jul 2010

- by Chris Mortley

Doncaster Rovers Football Club are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Simon Gillett on a two-year deal, following his release from League One outfit Southampton.

The move sees Gillett returning to the Keepmoat Stadium, after the 24 year-old enjoyed a fruitful two-month loan spell with Doncaster Rovers last term - impressing the management and supporters with his performances in the centre of the park.

Last term, Gillett made eleven appearances for Doncaster Rovers, coming in for Brian Stock whilst the Rover skipper recovered from a back injury. Despite being a mere 5'6'' tall, Gillett's strength and passing ability instantly made him an integral part of the Rovers midfield, with the player now set to compete with the likes of Stock, John Oster and Mark Wilson for a place in manager Sean O'Driscoll's starting eleven.

No matter how many times I refresh it I can't get that story? The lead one is the 2-0 win in the friendly. Nor can I see any sign of the free Sharp interview that others have said is on there?

It's all coming good, probably need a centre half I reckon and then anything else is a bonus IMO.

I still think we could do with a second left back as back-up for Friend, and another striker wouldn't go amiss either.

Great news that Gillett has signed, he did well for us on loan I thought, worked really hard and was a good part of the team in Stock's absence. We're finally moving forward this summer, a lot earlier than usual as well!

I thought he would have been given the number 4 shirt :/ does that mean we are signing 2 defenders or 1 defender and another midfielder since 4 and 5 are still available

Gillett is a free, Billy`s fee was paid in addition to the budget and the 3 loan players will not cost nowt, so who we going to spend our (or are for the young uns) largest budget on?

I'm typically sceptical.

31 appearances in 5 years at Southampton and then released when they're in league 1. Can't see it as anything other than a step sidewards in terms of quality.

We need someone of Wellens stature to 'put his foot in' like Richie or even Penney used to!

Ideal candidates are Hugo Colace or Danny Drinkwater.

Gillett is a good squad player-the stats don't matter, nor does his previous club. We saw him ourselves when he came on loan last season and he was solid.

I think Drinkwater is about to go on loan to Cardiff, and I don't think Colace is what we need. We didn't seem to really need a 'Wellens type' last season.

He didn't look out of place when he was here though and we experienced good form with him putting in some solid performances. I can see how he might struggle in a conventional 442 but we know certain players can play SODs way and some can't. Gillett can. I don't see him starring week in week out but we're already getting to a point where we're going to have some serious midfield depth.

Thanks for the help on finding the story people.

Pleased with this, he adds competition and bite to a strong midfield. I don't think we need any more midfield players now.

A centre half is the obvious priority and we're still a bit short of numbers upfront. If we were to get the rumoured loan striker I think I'd just blow my load!

Pleased with this. Did a good job for us last year and gives us a different option in the middle of the park.

Another well done to SOD, JR and the guys.

I don't agree that the squad is almost complete, though. Despite the quality we already have, we don't have anywhere near enough players in the squad. We need 2 more good players to give us some more strength in depth (even if they are loans) and a couple more (maybe youngsters) to give us the numbers required when the going gets tough with injuries and suspensions.

I think we're missing 1 more midfield player - someone with pace. It's the only option I can think of that's missing.

Another squad striker will be nice, but if Jet comes for the season and the rumoured 'other one', then we'll be mighty fine up top. Hayter can do a manful job as fill-in for Billy, should he get injured.

I also hope the rumopured loanee Cb is true - he sounds a bit of a find.

I agree another midfielder would be nice, but a Wellens \"seen it, done it\" type would be the one for me.  Someone with experience and a combative presence, who can grind that midfield to our advantage when we come up against the strongarm tactics.

Step forward Nicky Bailey.
