« on August 04, 2010, 08:53:34 pm by Sprotyrover »
Anybody been in the 'Dive bar' cask Corner on Cleveland street yet? its next to Tonic,
owned by the same guy who has the Toad brewery.

20 cask ales and 100 foreign Beers apparently. 'Hic'

i think the time of a bar in a town centre making its way
off cask condition ale is now behind us.

to have 20 different cask ales is a big gamble that i cant see paying out.

ctay as allready said it 'the beer they tried was rank'

real ale drinkers are a different breed from my experience,
will in the main have beards and drink their ales by the half glass, they alone will be the only punters that shall return and return to such a establishment, albeit once a month on a tuesday nite.i hope iam wrong and the bar out lives many others
but i cant see the day in day out market to support the bar.

the bar can only survive on passing trade for so long as the
novelty factor is still in the air.

the drinking market in the uk has changed and not what it was
20 years ago, pubs are falling by the wayside daily and will cararry on to do so.

As for the ale, well if you like your beer with hops, corn and nuts floating in it, then go for it........me I'm a tetley's man served from a WMC with an head on it, that can hold the Mrs' half a cider on it, without disturbance.

OK CAMRA guys, let me have it.

Incidentally, after we thrash Preston I'm leggin it back to Donny and going out round the very posh as f**k Bawtry. I'll be sharking for a better class of lady and I understand there's a new wine bar in town. I'll let you know which DRFC players I see and if I manage to pull owt.

they are a odd breed the real ale drinkers

was working in me local pub paddock in cantley when landlord
first got hand pull ale in.it was a quick first pull then 3 more slower pulls to make a pint.

alot of locals liked to have a head on pints,so at the loss of not getting a full pint by weights and measure you worked your way to giving a pint witha head, the customer is allways right.

on a certian day i was hit by a firm of real ale drinkers and it was 8 half pint hand pulls on the bounce, thats with serving the locals their 'pints' of hand pull.

real ale drinkers would stand back holding their half pints upto the light have a slight chin wag the sip their half pints,in the meanwhile the locals had knocked back their pints and were on their second pints.

treal ale drinkers then made a bad mistake of stepping in to the locals and tlling them that they was getting short measure pints and that hand pull pints should not have such a large head and pulled to the glass rim.

this went on for 20+mins and locals were getting pissed off,
i tried to tell real ale drinkers that the pints were getting pulled to how the customer aske for it.

real ale drinkers were having none of it,i just gave up
but had to step in when a local had had enough of a certian real ale drinker spouting this and that about the locals incorrect pulled pint

local words 'this is how i fcuking like and want me pint'
then grabbed mr real ale drinker by the nose and twisted it round.

still the real ale drinker never gave up so at least he was consistant.

Im a real ale drinker and regularly attend beer festivals in various places around the country.

The Camra event that you mention was clearly not a big event as at every beer festival I have ever been to, you get a lot of banter and bands playing and actually manage to drink some real beer that does not contain loads of chemicals like you get at most pubs in and around Doncaster.

I have not tried this new bar out yet but will pop along and try a pint and see what it is like.

To sterotype a man who likes a real pint of beer, brewed more often then not by a company within Britain, many of which are small micro breweries as a wierdo is a bit of a disgrace to be honest and maybe you need to open your mind a little!!

'most real ale drinkers that i came acorss' albeit it was 20+
years ago are a special breed to them sens.

but that still does not detract that this new bar in town
will make a go of it.

i hope iam wrong

Unfortunately I would probably agree with that fact, due to the majority of the people that go into town to drink in Doncaster are little chavs that are high as a kite on drugs!! The kind of pub that sells real ale in Doncaster is generally not accepted by most. Unfortunately for this pub, Weatherspoons already holds the majority of people that want to drink real ale in Doncaster and unfortunately I doubt this pub will be able to compete with the prices that Weatherspoons offer.

One of my favourite pubs in town is the Tut and Shive and its a shame to see most times I go in there how quiet it is!

its got to be a massive gamble having 20 different types
of cask conditioned ale on tap at once.

for sure there will be the popular ones which will be getting used all the time, hence that i will keep the quailty of the ale upto scratch.

but for sure there will be ones that hardly get used and in turn will effect the ale accordingly.

next time iam back in pubcaster i will make a point of droping into this new bar,not to taste what they sell but to see how
the pub is running, maybe i will learn som'ert.

I wonder if there is a new trend developing as there is a brand new pub opened up on Sheffield Railway station and its full of real ale and foreign Lager, gets very busy.

Plus there is a cracking little bar in York near the old market place called PIVO (thats czech for beer) again full of loads of excellent foreign beers and even Thorne best Bitter.

i bought our lass some Strawberry beer and it was cracking i had a taste not for me but the girls love it.

By the way a night out in town for me means Old masons,Little plogh,Yorkshire grey and Salutation. :P

Hope not as I love it.

oslo - little plough is now run by nick griffin (not that one!) who you might remember from behind the bar at The Nelson back in the old days

He's also got the Red Lion at Braithwell

Both apparently serve a decent pint (more of a Guinness drinker meself)

Whilst subscribing to \"each to their own\" I'm with Cussy on this one.  Once went to a Beer Festival in the Old Grandstand at the Race Course.  Quite a few Goth types there including a bird who kept a pet rat in her hand-bag, which she let out on occasions to sit on her shoulder.

You don't see that very often in \"normal pubs\" such as Biscuit Billys.........................................ahem

Bloody hell Sporty! That brings back some memories that name does :) A right seedy dive - and the place where I bought my first ever quarter ounce of something really rather interesting. Eight quid!!! Never my favourite watering hole though. The Turf, the Corner Pin and the old and really, really shitty Magdalene in the Market Place (did you ever see those bogs?!) but it had a fabulous pint of Tetley's.

I'd give my right arm for a pint of Barnsley Bitter just one more time. You should try the utter shite down here. Arkells? Jesus wept....

Cheers

RTID88. Just my experience mate. Now hard feelings and as said each to their won. I was just applying a bit of humour to my post (or trying). That said, do you have a beard? Do you wear sandals? Do you wear cords? Tan leather patch on elbows?

I love real ales!!

Yes some are rank but some are just plain gorgeous.  Easily better than the mass produced bitters and light years against the bland carbonated lagers.

Try the pub next to the Kelham Island brewery in Sheffield!! Great set of permanent beers and always an interesting selection of guest ales.  Plus the home made pork pies are bliss.  All you lager drinkers should try Pale Rider there.

Im very lucky in Guiseley to have some great breweries (Saltaire, Leeds, Copper Dragon etc) and brilliant proper ale houses near me.

The real ale industry is booming because the product is made with enthusiasm, care and love which cant be said about Carling, Stella et all.

So i think its brilliant that donny has got a proper ale houses rather than the god awful chainy pubs that dominate.

I certainly tastes like it Popsider! '2B's' or '3 B's'. Two B's can just about be managed as the taste is almost entirely absent. But it's as flat as a witches tit. 3B's has the most horrendous taste this side of stewed vomit. Of course, as I happen to live within a stones' throw of Peter Arkell I have been invited into his pad. Rather grand. Some of it's Norman. With a bloody ballroom upstairs! A nice old gent - but God knows how he's got away with brewing that rat poison all these years.

I called in last night and had a very nice pint of Silver King.

The pub is very basic and done out in old and reclaimed materials and is definitely not for the pound a pint brigade,£2.50ish for a pint of bitter. :)

Thinking of popping in there myself tonight.
It's hard to find a decent pint of beer these days, and some pubs often don't have any for sale at all, having succumbed to just selling different varieties of the girly stuff.
OK it can be argued that the girly stuff can actually be stronger than Bitter, but even the strong stuff tastes like thrice filtered  piss, although somehow with the salt retained.
wetherspoons can sometimes provide a decent pint providing you sample it before it's on the turn as opposed to actually turned, but the chances are risky.
Gimme a good pint of Black Sheep any day!
