Opinions please
« on October 10, 2010, 09:58:52 pm by DonnyBiz »
Evening all. Wife and I are discussing getting a house at the mo, I see this as an opportunity to sell moving to Donny to her (she's an Essex girl) and move back up there, as Essex is pissing me off. Anyway can any of you fine gentlemen let me know areas to avoid/go for these days please? Reading between the lines of some of the posts on here, I assume some areas are worse than others. Got 4 young 'uns under 5 years old and would like an area where I didn't have to worry about trouble or flooding etc.

Also wife says there must be no money and/or no work in Donny anymore and that's why house prices are so much cheaper than here in Essex. Any substance to her thinking? (There can't be she's female lol).

Thanks in advance  :)

I don't think theres anywhere you can live without having to be worried about trouble. I know Bessecarr has had its fair shre of problems lately.
Me Mam lives in Hooton Pagnell which is a sleepy picteresque village thats been plagued with house and car break ins.

I like Scawsby/ Cusworth myself with excellent schools as well.

No doubt Sprotborough, Bessacarr, Bawtry are amoungst the best areas.

Work still a problem I'm afraid - not much work around here - decent office work anyway!

Welcome home..... Hopefully!

Barnburgh and Harlington very good areas. No trouble. Very good junior school. Drs surgery in village. Close to Mexbrough for shopping and only about 8 miles from donny (and Rotherham and Barnsley). Dearne Valley call centre village only 3miles away and usually recruiting, if that's type of work wanted. Reasonable bus service if no transport. 4 pubs and 1 wm club within 1 and half mile radius - 1 in Barnburgh, 1 in Harlington, 1 just before getting to B and H, and 1 in Adwick on Dearne. Club us in Barnburgh.

DonnyBiz you are probably better off listing what you require, what you are willing to pay, do you like urban or rural areas etc etc

Everyone on here will be loyal to their own town and suburb (well all except Rigo).

There are some fantastic yokel yokel type very nice peaceful villages and are located in the 4 corners of Donny Fishlake, Sykehouse, Moss, Fenwick, Norton, Hootan Pagnall, Barnburgh, Harlington, Adwick on Dearne, Old Denaby, Clifton, Micklebring, Stainton, Braithwell, Braithwaite, Thorpe in Balne.

The are some lovely decent villages like Auckley, Finningley, Branton, Wadworth etc etc...

There are some big posh villages with all amenities and a very busy village/town centre like Tickhill, Bawtry.

If you like to be close to town (walkable), like I do and still live in a decent area then you have Cusworth, Sprotborough, Bessacarr, Scawsby, Wheatley Hills, Cantley.

The rest is predominantly made up of Pit Villages, which can be a bit cliquey and in-bred.....and I should know as I'm that in-bred

Then you have Stainforth.......where amongst many other attributes, people walk round in Teddy Boy Suits.

Haven't they spent a bob or two on Stainy recently?

I've heard they're doing it up a bit for next years Millenium celebrations.

Bentley's fine, but a big minus is its close proximity to Cusworth.
Mind you the people of Cusworth can claim to have better views than us Bentonians. In that respect it's better to be living in a shithole looking at a palace than living in a palace looking at a shithole!

I think Cusworth is a Government experiment, it`s a place where all the inbreds from places like Thorne go, to try and bring them up to the level of intelligence that the rest of us enjoy, poor souls!

I understand the close proximity thing, we have the same thing with Thorne and to a lesser extent Dunscroft!

Scawsby is boring, full of dog turd smeared streets and Cooplands wrappings, full of chavs, the traffic is bad and there isn't much to do (there's only so many times you can go to Cussy Hall).
I'm looking to get away from Donny to be honest, Melton Mowbray could be my next destination as they are class at making pork pies.

I noticed the Polish shop the other day. First thoughts were how on earth will they make it pay...Surely the people of Balby aren't that house proud?

Some great tips to follow up for me there lads cheers. As Cussy pointed out, some details might help. I'm after somewhere within 10-15 miles of town center, nice quiet area with good schools, pre-schools, access to shops and most importantly the KM. Need 4 bedrooms, there's 6 of us. My trade is Driving Instructor. Thanks.

I live in Dunsville now and its nice and quiet (not on the high street) and lived in Hatfield before, which was I also liked. But depends on how close to town you'd like to be.

I'd suggest Bawtry. Decent night out aswell.
Your not that far from the KMS.
You'll get the planes landing and taking off though.

It was n`t quiet in Dunsville on Saturday night, there were about 50 teenagers all over the place, coppers and ambulance, about halfway between St Mary`s Drive and Winchester Drive

Stainforth, 8 miles from Doncaster ?

Nice and Quiet (when the robbing parties are out) ?

Cracking schools    ?

Plenty of shops ?

No need for 4 bedrooms, everyone shares in Stainforth ?

Plenty of folk without a driving licence ?

St Ainforth it is then eh!  ;)

On that radiiiiii I think you can live anywhere in Donny Borough. It depends on how much conkers you have to play with?

For nigh on 200k you can own a 4 bedroom house in Cusworth (there's 5 of us) and other similar places, or dearer in some rural areas. Alternatively for 200k you can own a village if you want to live in Stainforth.

Stainforth happens to be a Town, so the price will be a bit dearer!  :P
