Net Books

Following on from Hoola's post

Anybody know what's best to get the wee shites for Xmas in terms of Internet access. Thinking of getting the 2 youngest a Net Book each, although they want lap tops. All they want is access to Internet.

Will a net book suffice?
Any horror stories?
Costs?

Net Books are fine if all you are doing is surfing the net. They struggle with anything else though.

I have two net books - one I bought and one I inherited from my daughter and love 'em both. The Dell is of better quality but the Acer was cheap.  They're great just for the internet and my mail -- not so much for downloading anything with content as there is not much disk space, as Mr. Frost says, as I didn't have enough room to download yahoo chat to hear the matches last year, so I'd say mostly good.  Perfect for my work travel though as it fits in a pocketbook.  :-)

Bought both mine a Samsung N130 netbook. Brilliant little surfing machines for around £270.

I thought I would be clever and get a netty when my old beastie conked out on me..Pah!

I can't say I like it overly, it's got pokey little keys and obviously a tiny screen, but most of all, I have fallen out of love with it because I have had such battles with messenger. For some reason netty hates messenger with a passion, I have loaded and deleted so many versions I have met myself coming backwards..
Considering messenger is essential, (it is ofcourse the way the fella and I get to see each other when we cant meet up) it is most stressful.

Saying all that, I guess if it wasn't so vital to have messenger , I would be quite happy with mine, it's an Asus eee 1005p seashell btw.

It is powerful enough to download films,( if you were allowed to)..lol

Has a charge of 11 hours battery time too...

It's on windows 7 starter, I've downloaded so many messenger formats I have lost track of which I downloaded tonight, although I know its not windows live 11, it didn't like that one at all. I just want a system that won't freeze either the cam or the words or both.

I think this is the 2009 version as I also had it on my desk top, which I miss dreadfully I have to say.

What problems are you having? Crashing the system? Messenger does use alot of memory.
They aren't as powerful as laptops as a rule, and can be prone to problems such as running day to day programme's such as messenger without issue's.

Sometimes the cam freezes, others I sit and type and there is a lag of a few seconds. I guess if that is the case then I really would be better with the older version as it wont have so many gizmo's attatched to it.
Hopefully anyway.
