Our Friends from Holland

A quiet week - so who are the following players who have played for Rovers this season and have had their names translated into Dutch (very loosely in some cases) - 4-5-1 structure:

Ontheiligen-bestelwagen

Slaapkamers
Slotbos
Vriend
Molens

Vrijmetselaar
Voorraad
Pijn
Kudde
Bosjes

Scherp

Some are very easy indeed..........

Ok, I'll give it a try:

Ontheiligen-bestelwagen   -     Kilgallon (in goal??)

Slaapkamers  -    Chambers
Slotbos
Vriend       -    Friend
Molens       -    Mills

Vrijmetselaar
Voorraad
Pijn         -    Payne
Kudde
Bosjes

Scherp       -    Sharp

Well, at least I know two are right!

Great start - 5 out of 6 Sandy

'Ontheiligen' means to smear or sully as in sullying someone's reputation, and bestelwagen = delivery-vehicle = van. More than a bit cryptic I'afraid

Slot = Lock; Bos = Wood

Bit harsh on Monty Python 'Liberty-Bell' Souza?

It was fun trying to figure those names out.  I live in the capital of NY, which was settled by the Dutch so we have many Dutch names here.

Somewhat off topic, but a funny story about a town in the Hudson Valley about 70 miles away called Fishkill (kill = creek) also settled about the Dutch.  The animal rights people got it into their heads that the name was disrespectful to the fish and wanted to change the name to Fishsave!  Really.  You can't make this stuff up!  Anyway, it didn't happen thankfully.

Thanks Sandy. Of course I believe Yankee comes from the Dutch Jantje (little Jan/John), and as we know NY was orginally NA

The remaining ones are:
Voorraad - Stock (as in we have that in stock)
Kudde - Hird (well Herd actually)
Bosjes - Woods

and finally Vrijmetselaar is Mason - as in Freemason

Yes, I had forgotten about NA!!  :)   And Albany, the capital of NY was originally Beverwyck.

Cheers for that!
