...where he saw this 14 year old kid caled Hameed playing barefoot in the street. Best young footballer he had ever seen.
Signed him up there and then and took him back to Barnsley. Worked on him in training for 6 months - the kid looked like a world-beater.
2 days shy of his 15th birthday, Robins put him on the bench for a league match away at Watford. 10 minutes to go and Barnsley are losing 3-1 when Andy Gray turns his ankle. Robins turns to Hameed and says, \"On you go kid.\"
Young Hameed trots on - youngest player in league history. He scores a diving header from the edge of the box with his first touch, dances past 7 players and flicks the ball over the keeper on 90 minutes and in the 5th minute of injury time, sticks in a free kick from 35 yards.
The players carry him off shoulder high. Robins puts his arm round him in tears, passes his mobile phone to the kid and says, \"Your family back home will be so proud. Call them.\"
Hameed, hands shaking, dials the number. \"Mother,\" he says, \"it's all wonderful. I'm brilliant. They love me here. I'm going to be a big star.\"
\"Damn you!\" His mother shouts. \"Football, football, football is all you think about. What about your family back here? We're living in the most deprived place on earth. Wild dogs roaming the streets. Hovel houses. Fear of violence always. Your father and brother cannot find work. The people get by on food that would make a rat vomit. Feral kids attack us when we leave the house.\"
\"Mother!\" says Hameed. \"I'm so sorry. I am so selfish.\"
\"Damn right, says his mother. \"If it wasn't for you and your football we'd never have had to move to Barnsley.\"
