What does everyone think of the idea in Free Press about winning City status next year.

I for one certainly back the bid

I can't wait to get out of the shit hole. Looks like NZ is a non starter so hopefully going back to my roots in Retford.

Donny's ok as far as northern towns go.  It's got problems but I work in places like Hyde, Wigan, Oldham, Rochdale and Dewsbury and makes you realise there are far worse places.

In my opinion Stoke is the arsehole of the universe.

Been to Nottingham today...and if Doncaster has thoughts of city status it has miles to go in comparison.

Public Transport, the Park and Ride / Tram system in Nottingham is absolutely superb, and cheap, puts the two bit cobbled together system in Doncaster to shame, and competitively priced too ..... http://www.thetram.net/times/index.php

Spotlessly clean city centre as well, with a distinct lack of chavvy teenagers slouched about on street corners embarrassing themselves.

Simply put, in comparison, its chalk and cheese, and if thats a benchmark for city status....sadly Doncaster are absolutely no where near.

I heard we only need to get a Cathedral - isn't that why they were working on one of the churches? - and a university, and I hear the Hub is trying to get that.

Correct me if I'm wrong about this, someone.

Complete fallacy that you need a cathedral or a university or a cetain population...all you need is for the Queenie to grant the status of city.

re Nottingham - agreed Doncaster's a long way from that but Sundeland, Preston? Not much different in my eyes.

But I reckon Reading's nailed on for the 2012 award.

I know that, but don't you need to meet certain criteria for that to happen?

... and Wolverhampton*** which won City status the time before last ... which is a similar type of place to Donny. It has a Premiership Team but that did not / does not count when Queenie decides

There is no population criteria - the smallest City in the UK is St Davids in Wales which is tiny (population 1800 ish) - and any City does not need to have a Cathedral to \"qualify\"

I agree that Reading looks stitched on this time

Reading will get 2012 for sure. The place is probably the largest settlement in England which isn't already a city, therefore it's almost a dead cert.

It's controversial, but I think our past with \"Donnygate\" scuppers our chances of getting city status.

Political decisions are not to be undermimed.
