Hard drive data recovery

My mates laptop has broke, it has loads of pictures of the kids on the hard drive (with no other back up). Had the hard drive in a spare laptop of mine to try & recover the data but it simply won't boot.
Any suggestions on what I may be able to do to get the data off?

I've never tried it myself but i've read about it, i think you need to connect the dead hard drive as a slave to a desktop hardrive, i think the IDE connections are different on lap top hard drives, so you'll need a compatible IDE cable, once you done that you need to run some recovery software, I think

If the hard drive still works then a 2.5\" hard drive enclosure will allow you to connect the drive to another computer via USB so you can recover the files you need. Ten a penny on eBay.
