Need help to choose a new pc.
« on July 08, 2011, 07:30:47 pm by Red wizard »
I don't know a great deal about computers so i could do with a bit of help in finding a new computer. I am after a desk top that will play games like fm,cod, and sim type games. my budget is about 5-6 hundered. If anyone knows of cheap places to buy from and what sort of spec i should be looking for it would be very helpful thanks.

If I was you I would look at something similar to this

http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/hp-pavilion-slimline-s5780uk-black-08702380-pdt.html

The things you need for stuff like COD is at least duel-core processor, 4GB of RAM and a dedicated graphics card. A lot of computers come without a graphics card that will support high end games like COD so 1GB VRAM from a dedicated graphics card is a definite need.

I like that PC a lot but I have a laptop with similar specs that I use, don't forget to look around for better prices too!

Yeh its a decent PC and the graphics card isn't the best. But at that price range its hard to find a machine with a great one. Probably the best idea would be to buy a similar PC without a dedicated graphics card and then go to a local computer shop and see what they can do for you. High end graphics cards aren't cheap though.

I wouldnt touch Dell or HP for a desktop.  They use non-standard parts so if something goes, like the motherboard, you are knackered and have to replace the whole thing.

I have a Mesh desktop which I bought nearly 6 years ago, and it is still quicker than my corei3 laptop.  Mesh.co.uk are certainly worth a look, and offer good value.  I got a mate who is a system builder to priceup the components of my Mesh to see if he could build it cheaper, and he said he didnt know how they did it for the price.  At the prices he could buy the components, he was £20 over what they charged, plus they threw WinXP and 12 months support in too!

Rob, Mesh have gone bust but the warranty's have been taken over by pc peripherals

I must admit my mesh desktop is a cracker and I couldn't get anywhere near the spec anywhere else

This company is apparently very good http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/computers-for-next-day-delivery/ pre built or configure your own

If you've already got a basic desktop, you might only need to just upgrade the bits that you need to upgrade. What's your current spec?

Thanks for that, Dagger. That's a real shame. They were spot on when I bought mine.

If you're under the impression that there's a deadline then, it's actually the day before the season kicks off :)

I mean the deadline to be scouted.

Had to go to Sheff pc world to get it though and i got the last one and they won't be getting any more aas they are getting a new line in.

Whatever you do not go saying this to a PC World adviser, their eyes will light up and they will screw you over with a Packard Bell piece of sh*te!!!
