Didn't Thatcher once say it'd be better to abandon the cities of the north? (or do I just hate her that much and such was her attitude towards us oop here that I managed to make that up?)

I heard about this on Radio Sheffield this morning. The bloke from the Doncaster Central Development Trust sounded geuinely gutted that his project had been set back but was resigned to just giving some of the rooms a lick of paint to use as artists' studios and keep-fit venues. No hint of going elsewhere to look for investment. If I were him I'd be getting on the blower to agentds representing some of the borough's successful artists like Brian Blessed, Sheridan Smith, Lesley Garrett et al to drum up a bit of support for private funding and benefit events.

I'd also be in touch with potential investors e.g. Kirkham, Terry & Dick, JR etc. to make a viable commercial proposal delivering a return on investment in an economy that's so flat that practically any profit is going to beat most investments in the market. That's with the added bonus of positive feeling and good PR you get from philanthropic ventures.
