Spanish Gold..
« on October 21, 2011, 08:23:13 pm by jucyberry »
Sitting here thinking about the sweets we used to have when I was a kid in the seventies..I loved the Spanish Gold coconut tobacco.. Terribly un pc now ofcourse as we all know how easily the youth of today are corrupted...Hands up how many of you became heavy smokers of coconut because of this sweet treat....lol

Do you also remember the Old Jamaica rum and rasin chocolate bars? seriously tasty chocolate..

I remember when monster munch was first launched, they ran a competition to win a chopper bike (my object of deep, deep desire) You had to think of a totally foul meal for the monsters..I didn't win, all I got was a poxy poster... :(

So, what sweets do you have fond childhood memories of?

Oooh. Well, seeing as we're on the subject of gold, buying a bag of these was one of the weeks highlights.

Otherwise, Trebor Mummies. They tasted absolutely rank, but for some reason I used to love collecting all the lame 'scary' stories printed on the inside.

Oh, and a quarter of rhubard and custard went down a treat too.

Gold nuggets.....I remember them...lovely random sized little yellow things..lol..
If you bought Black jacks you bought Fruit salad too, the two went hand in hand I think.., And Chris, I can remember mars bars costing 4p (new money)...Mind you, that was back when players weights were 24p for twenty and small children were allowed to buy them for their dads.....

Only time I ever tried smoking I got caught because my friend and I thought we would be clever and just buy ten.... But since dad only smoked 20's I was caught...Got wrong off the woman in the shop, and dad when she told him...Ah the joys of small village life...lol

You can buy the Spanish Gold backy from Granelli's sweet shop just off Park square  Roundabout in Sheffield,I think it is called Cricket inn road, come down Parkway and turn 1st left its ten yards up on the right, just take plenty of pennies because the shop is packed with jars full of every sweet you can think of.

Anyone of a certain age who lived in Edlington (i'm 45 now) would probably remember Robinson's Grocers Shop on Central Terrace...well they were my Grandparents (sadly my Grandad is no longer with us). Well the shop front had 2 front windows, one either side of the door. As you looked, to the left, was fruit and veg. But to the right was my paradise...it was the sweets window.

There were so many different sorts in there it's hard to know where to start to be honest...safe to say, during my childhood, I sampled them all

Golden nuggets were alright, but you had to chew a bagful to get a decent blob of chewy!

Detective Cheroots. Like thin brown candy sticks. I think i was the only one buying them, so they stopped stocking them.

A quarter of kop kops always touched the spot for 2p.

A quarter of cough candy, but then again you only got about 3-4 big chunks.

A quarter of aniseed balls usually lasted a week (and what was that acrid tasting little ball thing in the middle of them)

And another old chestnut..........what were those twigs (real twigs) that were aniseed tasting. Holey moley it's killing me, they had proper bark on them and then a yellow sap underneath that you sucked the life out of (ooo errr)

Now then sweet cheeks.......was that the old cabana bars?

Never got on with those bad boys.

I prefer a Star Bar, the daddy of chocolate bars.

However, the sweet tasting mother of them all is the old bar that is The Caramac Bar. Not many shops sell em these days, but I always buy one when I see them. Not really a choccy fan, but always bray these into me when I see them. Always to thin in appearance and gone in no time. Now, if they fattened them up like a Galaxy bar or Toblerone, I think I would have an end like an Otters nose.

It wasn't aniseed, it was liquorice:

http://www.sugarboy.co.uk/acatalog/Liquorice_Wood.html

Another question for you all...what was what was essentially coloured sugar called round your way? On this site they're called 'Rainbow Crystals'

http://www.sugarboy.co.uk/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2esugarboy%2eco%2euk%2facatalog%2fLiquorice_Wood%2ehtml&WD=rainbow&SHOP=%20&PN=copy_of_Rainbow_Crystals_%2ehtml%23a1235112#a1235112

But where I grew up at the time (Derbyshire), everyone at school called it 'kali' (pronounced 'kay-lie'). What did all you lot call it when you were a kid? I'm sure it was called different things in different places...

Nutty bars!  Essentailly a stick of fudge rolled in real peanuts.

You can just see one at the top left of this picture.....

....along with Treets (like M&Ms, but the toffee ones in the blue bag were amazing), Vice Versas (Minstrels but half white chocoate, half milk), and Fry's Five Centres, like a Fry's Mint Creme, but 5 different fruit flavour fondat fillings.  The lime one was gorgeous.

Also in that picture is the aforementioned Cabana and Texan, and the half-brother of the Caramac - the Pink Panther - like strawberry flavoured white chiocolate.

I reember the Pink Panther bars, disgustingly sweet and rather nasty.. Caramac however is georgous..Mint cracknell chocolate.. remember that?

How many of you can remember wandering around with your sweet cigarettes, complete with red tip? Or even nicer (kids have no tastebuds I think) the chocolate cigarettes..

Yup

Do you remember the glass covered boxes with the 'penny' sweets. All the chews, shrimps, flying saucers! etc. All 4, 2, or 1 for a penny. Used to take me ages to spend my threepenny bit!!!

I used to love these chocolate balls with a mint flavoured shell, which were around in the mid-eighties. They came in a small cardboard container the size of a packet of ten fags.

Anyone have any idea what they were called? I could murder one right now.
