thanks for that link, absolutely brilliant

i had a look at the Arsenal game too, lost 3-0, some things never change, but a crowd of 57,000, can you imagine that at the Emirates if they drew us?

Which ground is that at? Fascinating footage anyway, and it's great to see greats like Gregg and Jeffrey actually in action. This is the football that my grandad used to go and watch, it's changed so much of course in the time since.

He went to the Keepmoat once, said it \"felt like a prison\" and has never returned since!

The match is at Eastville, former home of Bristol Rovers. They moved out in the mid-80s.

It used to host dog racing as well as football and was located close to a gasworks- hence Rovers' nickname \"The Gasheads!\"

Ah thankyou, thought it looked a little oddly built but the dog racing explains that - I knew they had had a long-trm hom before having to move out and play at Bath and the Mem since then.

Memories,

I only saw Alick in his last period at Donny. What was noticeable was that Alick in the clip was half the size as a 17 year old.

His first game back at Belle View attracted 28000 how we would like that now. I will never forget King Alick and consider myself lucky to have seen him play especially the season he was the leagues top scorer along with Hector of Derby.

When we get some money in the bank how about a statue at the KM?

Thanks for the clip, shear nostalgia.

Wasn't it Robin Stubbs of Torquay that was joint top scorer?
He married the original Generation Game hostess (Anthea Redfern?)
who later married Bruce Forsyth.

Hate to be a killjoy but Alick's first game back in 1963-4 was a reserve game (I think against Crewe) and there were about 2800 in attendance, not 28000 (I think there were 2836 - me and 2835 others). Normal reserve attendances were between 100 and 200 in those days.  His first game back in the first team was against Southport, attendance 11719 when average was ca 6000.

And yes it was Robin Stubbs (AFAIK no relation to Billy) who equalled Alick's 39 league and cup goals that season, but Alick was out on his own as the leagues' leading scorer with 36 league goals.

Agree 100% with everything else, especially the statue. Would also recommend his biography to any football supporter, let alone Rovers supporters. A very special person and a very special story.

If Doncaster Rovers players and fans should ever require spiritual guidance then no one has more qualities to give inspiration.
