Bobjimwilly.

I hate to be a pedant, but I have to point out your incorrect use of the possessive apostrophe.

You should have written, "...the error of mjdgregs' ways" not "...the error of mjdgreg's ways".

Glad to have your support on this issue Billy. Like me you are obviously very intelligent (if often misguided).

well since I don't feel wounded you won't have a problem, will you?

I refuse to denigrate you. If I were to offer some advice though, it would be to stop digging the hole.

More evidence of the terrible performance of the last Labour government. The coalition have got a big job on their hands rectifying the situation.

Mick I love a good bashing of New Labour but this is getting ridiculous now. In fact the pronounciation of "th's" and "f's" is a myth, try it yourself with "fingers and thumbs", if you try to swap it around to "Thingers and Fumb" it doesn't work, it only sounds different if you try to say "fumbs and thingers". Oh and one more thing: Thuck Oath.

Sorry but you've lost me. How can it be a myth when I hear people saying fink instead of think, vey instead of they etc.?  In my book sloppy speech equals sloppy person. If I was interviewing someone for a job and vey spoke like vat then it would be a very short interview indeed no matter what their qualifications were. I've discussed this with many of my business colleagues and they all concur.

Trust me, I'm doing the afflicted a major service by getting this out in the open. It's a bit of a taboo subject, because those of us that aren't afflicted feel sorry for those that are, and find it difficult to point out the error of their ways for fear of upsetting them. Thank goodness there are people around like me that don't mind upsetting people.

Could it be you are a 'f' er and 'v' er? If you are then it's never too late to change your ways. Get it sorted and see your life chances improve dramatically. Don't sort it out and you will forever be consigned to the bottom of the social pile.

Just do it - show me where I'm wrong :) I'm genuinely intrigued. I'll take it as you being unable to "pull apart my appalling grammar" if you again refuse the opportunity to do so.

You should have written, "...the error of Micks' ways" not "...the error of Mick's ways".

Erm, not sure you're correct there BST?

http://oxforddictionaries.com/words/apostrophe

If Mick's name was "Micks", then you'd be correct, but his name is "Mick". So being a name, without an S, and the "ways" being his possession, you add the apostrophe between the name and the "s", I believe?

I refuse to embarrass you publicly. I will say though that your last post is a much better effort than the previous ones.

I'm sure he's wrong but I didn't want to embarrass him publicly like what you're trying to do. It's an easy mistake and I wouldn't be too critical of anyone that gets their apostrophes in slightly the wrong place. however starting sentences without a capital letter and not finishing them with a full stop is unforgivable

there we go :) I don't write like that in my work, you know, where it's actually important, so that's all that matters to me.

Bobjim

It kind of loses summat in the explanation but think about Micks' multiple personalities...

Mick, if you think it is an actual problem then explain to me how your business colleagues and yourself bypass the McGurk Effect?

I and my business colleagues don't think it's a problem we know it definitely is. I would accept the argument that maybe we shouldn't judge people so harshly but unfortunately first impressions are so important and as soon as any of us hear a 'f' or 'v' we instantly dismiss that candidate for the job (unless it is a menial job). We all instinctively view someone who 'f' s and 'v' s as thick and not worthy of a decent employment position.

The McGurk  effect is a very interesting phenomenon. However I do not believe it applies to the situation I am describing. If you see someone say fink you never confuse that with think. The fact you can see their lips further reinforces the use of 'f' instead of 'th'. I like most others when we hear fink and can't see the person's face have no trouble deciphering that an 'f' has been used instead of a 'th'. So the McGurk phenomenon does not apply to my argument.

Do your own experiment. Next time you meet someone who 'f' s and 'v' s enquire as to the type of job they do. I'll bet that over 90% of the time they will be in low paid employment. Next time you meet a professional person, for example  a doctor I'll guarantee that they will not 'f' and 'v' in well over 90% of cases.

'f' ers and 'v' ers may not like what I'm saying but it is incontrovertible fact. Change your ways before it is too late. Do you really want people sniggering behind your back? Please, please stop your children falling into this trap. They may think it's big and clever at the moment but when they come to join the workforce
they will find many doors closed. How then as a parent will you feel about not sorting the problem out?

Editing again? You may wish to spell-check before you post in future.

Also there's no need for another paragraph after 'workforce'.

No need to thank me, I'm always happy to help someone's education.

I refuse to spell-check. I am quite happy to rely on my photographic memory for instant recall of how to spell. There isn't a new paragraph after 'workforce'. The site was playing up at the time and didn't load my post as written. You may need to do some work on paragraphs yourself, as three paragraphs for such a short post is a bit over the top.

I see you managed to post without editing this time. My encouragement is obviously working. Well done Mick.
