I became aware of county/state football teams in Spain a while ago. Catalan and Basque still have theirs and Andalucia had one up until about 5 years ago. Some other states there I presume still have theirs. They idea is they come together occasionally for exhibition matches, testimonials and the like. To look at the Catalan side, for example, shows how strong they can be. The Basque and Andalucian lesser so ...
but with all the talk of Yorkshire during the Olympics it got me thinking. If Yorkshire was an independent country at the Olympics, what would be the current Yorkshire side?
Same selection criteria as national teams. Players must have been born or have Yorkshire parentage.
Just a bit of fun, interested to see what we might come up with.
G - Paul Robinson - Blackburn (b. Beverley)
G - David Stockdale - Fulham (b. Leeds)
D - Danny Rose - Spurs (b. Doncaster)
D - Kyle Walker - Spurs (b. Sheffield)
D - Michael Dawson - Spurs (b. Leyburn)
D - Micah Richards - Man City (born in Birmingham but parents are from Leeds. Supposedly born there whilst his parents visited friends)
M - Aaron Lennon - Spurs (b. Leeds)
M - James Millner - Man. City (b. Leeds)
M - Stewart Downing - Liverpool (b. Middlesborough)
M - Jacob Butterfield - Norwich (b. Bradford)
M - Jonny Howson - Norwich (b. Leeds)
F - Fraizer Campbell - Sunderland (b. Huddersfield)
F - Caleb Folan (b. Leeds)
Could technically claim Gary Cahill too (b. Dronfield). Sheffield FC play there so I suppose it's a sort of claim. Can't help but notice too that Spurs seems to be over run with Yorkshire lads.
Managers ... Keegan, Steve McLaren ... gotta be Mick McCarthy for me.
