Always liked the guy  :)

Per @Steve_Crossman -George Friend was due thousands of pounds from #DRFC per a clause in his contract. He's told the club to keep the money

My Middlesboro supporeting colleague at work cannot believe how good a player we gave to them, covers the whole pitch and is a real star. A top bloke as well obviously, Thanks George Friend, for all you did for us.

What a legend, one of the few intelligent footballers I've met, and obviously a generous man too.

Very generous if true, because a contract is a contract,it shows he enjoyed his time here, and valued what the club did for him, though i didn't rate him as a footballer,he's obviously a good bloke, good luck George :scarf:

Well it is true, he's also a member of the Alliance!

If ever it needed confirming any more, George Friend is an absolute legend and one of the all-round nicest blokes I think we've ever had play for us. Total star, the model professional.

i was a bit unsure about george when he first signed but he grew on me quickly and always look out for him now. what a legend for waive-ring his fee's etc.  shows you that there are some nice guys in football you wouldn't see the prem crew doing that! #legendofdrfc

In the programme notes one game he was featured for a Q&A, when asked about what he'd buy with a lottery win (I think it was that sort of Q), replied "My Dad a new tractor".
Can you imagine the Man City/Utd/Chelsea etc players saying something similar?

I remember, like others, thinking he wasn't very good in the first couple of months after signing for us. I then met him and felt really bad for thinking that of him because he was one of the nicest blokes I've ever met! Things turned for him when he moved to CB and then he put in some really good performances for us, and you could always see on his face just how gutted he was when we lost. I think by the end of last season it only seemed to be him and Jimmy O'Connor who looked like the losses still hurt, everyone else seemed resigned to our fate.

A top bloke, and like SM says above, still paying his money into the Rovers Alliance even though he has no ties with us whatsoever. Can't imagine many other ex-players doing something like that.

My best guess would be it was the 10% of the fee paid by 'boro, as he didnt ask for a transfer and would be entitled. so any amount ( depending on which site you read ) between 10 and 45K.

What a star. Great player and a nice bloke to boot. Boro don't know how lucky they are to have him, apparently they love him up there. Absolutely quality player, always thought very highly of him but now even more so. Great story.
