Malwarebites - Anti Malware
« on January 02, 2013, 02:00:18 pm by Donnywolf »
Just updated on PC and Laptop but since then Laptop one wont deliver the full service and will always get to about 50000 items checked and then stop and will not go further

It will hang several times on the way to 50000 items but if left then resumes but 50000 or just under and it wont go further

I have deleted and reinstalled it but the same happens each time. The Desktop PC is unaffected

Any ideas (virus?) or fixes a duffer can follow please ?

I DID start PC in safe mode with Networking and ran Malawarebytes then and it hung after roundabout the same time had elapsed

Cheers DW

Have you run chkdsk? It'll try to repair any lost files or errors
Start
Computer
Right click on Hard drive
Properties
tools
 error check
check now

it will ask if you want to schedule on next rebbot tick yes and reboot

in fact have you defragged the drive you'll see the option if you follow the chkdsk instructions

you may as well run your anti virus and spybot in safe mode as well just in case

if that don't work..................

Cheers

I will try defrag now

I just tried Full Scan on MBAM and annoyingly it got to 65000 and then hung for ages and did not restart

I just tried the chkdsk but it did not seem to do change anything. I actually recognised it because when Malaware hangs there is no option but to turn off Laptop by holding down start button. When I restarted it up popped chkdsk which I had never seen before and of course I was then bricking it and thinking "oh no what now".

Anyway it ran last night and then came on again and has run twice today plus the one I ran at your suggestion. Defrag coming now

Cheers DW

Defrag ran for over 6 hours and did not finish !

Cant get Malwarebytes to finish any type of Scan (seems to get stuck in the "fonts" section of windows)

McAfee also will not run to a finish

They all hang then I have to switch off  - by holding start button in - then I can restart

Internet is ok but I feel exposed somehow....is it time to go to the PC Shop for assistance ?

Run defrag  but let it finish, I take it there was more red than any other colour  :ermm: then run it again it should only take 5 mins or so the second time.
Then chkdsk it, which also can take an age, ask it to attempt to repair bad sectors

If all that fails I would consider a new windows install but don't just take my word on that

Cheers

I could not see the progress of the defrag. Usually coloured blocks but this time I must have accessed via different way and it was just the revolvong cursor with no % totals either

So I could not tell if it was actually doing anything and after 6 hours in total I gave up

Try downloading and running CCleaner by Piriform (free version) let it clear out all of the crap in your internet cache, and run a registry scan and clean.

A combination of this and Malware Bytes generally sorts out any issues I see.

Try this : http://portablexapps.blogspot.co.uk/2012/08/malwarebytes-anti-malware-portable.html

It's the portable version of mbam so doesn't need installing.  If your mbam is failing because of your PC's installation/registry then this should run.  If however it's a hardware problem then I'd start by copying anything off the laptop that you wouldn't want to lose before doing anything else.

Doing a ChkDsk is the next step to see if the drive itself falls over.  Do it from safe mode if possible and use the method described by Dagenham in his first reply or from the command line using chkdsk /r

Defragging makes NO difference these days.  It did back in the day (ie before XP) but modern hard disks and other media are so fast that it makes not perceptible difference these days.  Pretty much all other operating systems (Linux, Android, OSx) don't even bother giving you the option to do it anymore.  In fact defragging a drive with a hardware error is a sure fire way of losing data as it moves the data around the drive and in/out of the damaged areas.

If it still hangs then you're only one step from having to reinstall Windows or not us mbam.  You can take out your drive and attach it to your PC and run the chkdsk and virus checks that way or boot a Linux CD and use Linux to check the disk.  I take it as read that 95% of people don't want to do either of these, but they're the final steps before windows repairs and reinstallations.

If Spybot and your antivirus are reporting back as fine though it's whether destroying/rebuilding your windows install is less important than using mbam.

You could try STINGER which is a little anti-virus tool from McAfee
http://www.mcafee.com/uk/downloads/free-tools/stinger.aspx
I first came across it when working, our IT people used it on occasions and runs quite quickly

Thanks for all the advice to all responders - sincerely !

Some of it is way beyond my capabilities I am afraid so I will have to surrender the Laptop to the local PC Fixer

I have been virus affected twice in the last 18 months despite (honest) not looking at anything I think is dodgy and if McAfee warns "whoa do you really want to go there" I dont !

Its cost me £40 twice already and this looks like another one coming. Maybe I should get SKY and watch that instead of using the Laptop !

Before you do, download cccleaner click on registry  then scan for issues, then fix issues, it'll then give you a couple of options to  fix all, and backup  just accept them and tell it to fix  yet again run this a couple of times as it quite often finds bits on the 2nd or 3rd scan then try malwarebytes  then  take it too the pc shop  :)

I've paid £25 in Donny for an install ( cos I was pigged of with the stupid machine playing up everytime I tried) but I don't think 40 is right ott depending where you live, no doubt somebody will prove me wrong

Tried the ccleaner and unfortunately the McAfee hung again after 59%

Reinstalled Malwarebytes which ran in fits and starts for 19 minutes and I was getting optimistic but it then "hung" for so long that I gave up and closed it down

Thanks anyway JT
