So, I was discussing the glorious Frank Turner with my fellow Rovers fans over a several jagerbombs prior to yesterdays match, that along with the numerous references to One Direction on here nowadays inspired me to start a music thread....

My tastes have evolved over the last year or so, being in London and having so much live music on my doorstep has been ace for discovering smaller acts who are bloody awesome.

Aside from Frank (who is about to put a restraining order on me) my current favourite artist at the minute is a guy called Gaz Brookfield - an acoustic singer/songwriter from Bristol. He is a lyrical genius and a thoroughly nice chap. I think you should check him out:

I'm still a bit undecided on Jake Bugg, I don't skip to the next track when he comes on shuffle, but at the same time I have to be really in the mood to listen to the album all the way through.

I have got tickets to go and see him in February, but Jim Lockey & The Solemn Sun are in London on the same night and I am tempted to sell the Jake tickets & go see them instead.

Went to see Frank Turner at Sheffield in November. Absolutely amazing show and we will be going again next time he's round.

... We weren't even drinking neither

I like the first few tracks on Buggs album, but after about track 4 or 5 it goes downhill IMO.

I've seen Frank Turner about 10 times (first time was when he supported Green Day at Old Trafford Cricket ground 3 years ago), and I think I might be personally responsible for about a dozen forum users going to see him (Hi Ruth!).  The guy is a genius.  Jim Lockey supported Frank Turner on this last tour, and he is very good too.  Jake Bugg is not very good, sadly.  All hype.  Frank Turner deserves more attention.

Not being argumentative Rob but what do you base that comment on?
My wife and daughter saw him in 2011 when he was supporting Roddy Woomble (Idlewild) and raved about him.  We then saw him at a little club in February last year and were amazed by his performance, we've also got tickets for his Nottinham Rock City gig.
Mr Frost, going a little bit overboard with the Dylan comment JMHO

Any artist who makes it in the big time is then deemed by many as shit.
I heard of Jake Bugg before any of his commercial success and thought he was fantastic, and think his debut album is brilliant.

One album to watch this year will be new Arctic Monkeys one, being produced by Metallica apparently. Could be interesting.

Agree on Frank Turner. He's one of the rare artists who's achieved commerical and critical success, nearly everyone seems to like him. His earlier work as frontman of Million Dead is also worth checking out.

Jim Lockey is ace - I am almost certain that I will be selling my Jake Bugg tickets to go see JL instead.

I think Jake Bugg has become a bit of a victim of Radio One.... that bit of popularity and the fan boys who only like music when it is exclusive go off him. There is nothing in life I destest more than music snobs who think that as soon as an artist gets the slightest bit 'famous' then it is uncool to like them. I was listening to Frank Turner when tutoring a few months ago and someone walked in the room and recognised who it was and then proceeded to bang on about how they didn't like him anymore because he was 'famous'. Like it makes him any less of a genius or any less good... His stuff gets better & better rather than going backwards. Anyone who saw the tour or got hold of the download would know that Four Simple Words is one of his best songs yet (plus it made me an MTV superstar as I was at Brighton where the filmed the video!!).

Another band that I have been giving a lot of airplay to is The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, will certainly be going to see them the next time they are in the UK.

Oh, and not that they are any bit in the slightest bit unknown or unpopular - The Gaslight Anthem, sat on a bloody coach for 16 hours to see them in Paris back in November. Brian Fallon is an absolute GOD!

Not being a music snob or anything, raven, I just dont like Jake Bugg's music.  It just doesnt do it for me.

Frank Turner announced his new album today, Tape Deck Heart, and a mini tour to support its release in April.  Going to see him again at Leeds Uni Refectory.

Agree Rob, we saw him when he was in NYC and he was fab!!  I danced the night away and luckily was not in the mosh pit risking my life or being trampled!  I particularly like his lyrics and spent time just reading them because his poetry is funny, touching and creative.  Cheers Rob for the heads up on him many years ago. He certainly is special (and stinkin cute as well)!

Can't wait for the new album, heard most of the songs on it given he played a number on tour and at the smaller gigs etc, set to be an blinder and I imagine it will be even bigger than England Keep My Bones.

I've got mine on pre order for the presale code - hoping to get Leeds & Manchester tickets.

Sandy - I would say stinking hot rather than cute!!

On a completly different genre altogether, any of you young people ever seen Mr B the Gentleman Rhymer? He's playing in Bristol in a couple of weeks and am thinking of going, looks absolutely bonkers, its got to be either absolutely brilliant or absolutely crap (which Crowle Rover would probably say about sums up my record collection).

Went off them when they postponed their gig at the Leopard in favour of doing something much more rock starry as they had got "big" between announcing it and the date of the gig.

When the gig was rescheduled, they put ticket prices up and only played for 30 mins.

On the guestlist for The Vaccines tomorrow night along with Tom Odell & Kodaline. I missed out on seeing The Vaccines at the Dome last year when something else came up so looking forward to it. Only thing better than a gig is a free gig!

The Joy Formidable. Looking forward to this album dropping through my letterbox this week, one of very few new bands that I feel inspired by these days.

Quite like these guys too.

I've never been totally comfortable with Yeah Yeah Yeah's, they have some fantastic songs (like Gold Lion and Maps), but they're overall a bit too artsy for me:

Love this though:

I'm a massive fan of Bloc Party but I was slightly disappointed with their new album after such a long wait:

I remember hearing them rattle through a few tracks on Steve Lamacq in 2000/2001 when their first EP came out. Thought they were incredible. I'm not sure they've ever quite lived up to their early potential...but I live in hope.
