I used to work with Ros.  She is very good indeed, and cares deeply about the Borough.  She will make an excellent Mayor.

I hope so Rob, but I'm sceptical (surprise surprise) that we'll be back to getting nothing done as the party in power will just do meeting after meeting (enjoying their free lunches) and never get anywhere....

At least Winter and Davies were strong (and independent) enough to get things moving in the town.

I'm really disappointed that we've got a no-mark faceless party person now. Hope she proves me wrong!
But given your comments, I am more optimistic sir!

Davies for me was a complete waste of time, I tried to contact him numerous times just lately over the problems caused by the repair of the landslip at Hatfield pit, he never responded once! I thought maybe he`s a bit busy, but then I see him on the news unveiling a plaque to commemorate a former poet lauriette, he`s got time to do that, but has n`t got time to address issues that really concern people. I see even though he does n`t like football he got in on the act on Monday night at the KM. Good riddance to the man, all he cared about was himself and his freebies at the racecourse!

Had Rob Jones been standing I'm sure he'd have got about 90% of the vote!

It's incredible how that has dragged on... am I right in thinking that trains will be affected until something like October?

It`s a bigger job than most folk realise 1.5 million tons of spoil has to be removed before they can start work on the line. September was last official word on it, but I have heard on the grapevine it could be nearer November/ December, my lad has just started work on the pit site on security and they`ve told him their contract is for a year

Even though I no longer live in the town , Davies has been an embaressment
by association. I was stunned when he was elected as an 'english democrat',
this as opposed to a french or german democrat I assume.

I remember hearing him  on Radio Sheffieldon his first day in post ,
throwing his dummy out thr pram and storming out of the studio
when asked how he would implement one of his main policies ,
ie reduce the number of councillors, when this was determined by
Parliament and not within his jurisdiction , proving not only had he no idea
what he was doing but didn't even ubnderstand what he  was talking about.

A position he managed to continue until kicked out.

Still astonished how many voted for him.
At least the voted mind - should be compulsory.

Davies did have some success with anti-social behaviour and crime.

He also gave the town the third lowest council tax in the country. I suspect that will change now.

Hopefully she'll do something to help this town keep young people here.  I'm moving away shortly, I just can't get the work I want here really.  Just like the majority of people my age, there's nothing for us here.  This town does very little to keep people with any sort of higher education.  She wants to create apprenticeships but if something was done to keep people with degrees etc in the area that would help those who need apprenticeships as business grows.

One thing they should stop aswell is this ridiculous notion of people not going to their local school.  I also was running through a local park this morning littered in rubbish, broken glass etc, wouldn't fancy playing football there.  The town seamt to progress around 10 years ago but has been steadily going nowhere.  It's all well and good blaming cuts and all that kind of thing, there's plenty that can be done without spending huge amounts of money.  Labour have no excuses around here anymore, here's hoping they deliver this time.

I doubt she'll be pushing council taxes up though she's pledged to cut the cost of living afterall....

This goes way beyond the remit of a local mayor to be fair. The North has been draining large numbers of it's most talented young people to the south east for decades now.

This West Coast Mainline upgrade is a sorry statement of intent too.....

Doncaster, Hull & the Tyne-Tees area will continue to suffer should Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield and Manchester all benefit from this.

Property prices are reportedly rising in areas close to where the high speed line will be around Birmingham.

I suspect this is because the line is largely going to provide a new commuter route into London. That isn't doing a lot to address the imbalances in this country.

What the proposed high speed line from Birmingham to the North West and Sheffield/Leeds achieve, who knows?

We won't be seeing that for a longtime yet anyway.

It's ironic; when I was at EWS Railways, we always laughed at why there was a major yard at Toton. It was in the middle of nowhere, but now (just like you said in Birmingham); the local residents are now hoping to see things improving (albeit in a number of years time).

When I was there; there was also talk of a change on the East Coast mainline whereby we'd have had a Doncaster Parkway station (down Middle bank) with loads of parking to assist commuters link onto a high speed line.
From memory there'd have been new stations at Stevenage and Edinburgh too....

Unfortunately the East side is being forgotten about at the moment (just like the M11 link up to Hull & through to Newcastle).

It feels like there's being wedges driven through this country (not just social, but also eco-geographical) at the moment.

(By the way, I just made that last word up!!)

He said on numerous occasions he didn't believe it is the councils job to run a venture like a stadium, so I am pretty sure he would have been pushing for Rovers to take it on.

May I ask why a mayor has to be politically aligned? Maybe I'm just being naive.

Didn't they say something (while Davies was still in charge) about a civic reception for Rovers sometime in the future?

I wonder if that'll still go ahead?

He also gave the town the third lowest council tax in the country. I suspect that will change now.

Yes....at the expense of services, wage cuts for the lower paid workers, and redundancies of many in social care and closure of social education centres.

Frankly, if an extra 1% on the council tax would have kept a few hundred DMBC staff in employment and therefore maintained a decent standard of service Id prefer that.

1%, for most of the Borough, is under £10. I know Id rather have glass swept up in parks, our mentally vulnerable citizens and children at risk cared for adequately and given the time and energy they deserve for that.....but, your right, not everyone would.

No Red. It's a forum where people display their ignorance, prejudices and emotions. Pies was suggesting your image and reputation would be better if you took a little more care.

And for the record, I'm with duke. I'd far rather pay more council Tax, and income tax, if the shit state of many things in this country would be improved. Like I said a couple of months ago, that blasted woman made income tax a dirty word. It isn't.
