David Beckham
« on May 16, 2013, 06:03:04 pm by bangormaine »
The T.V is awash with Tales of Mr Beckham this evening. BUT

You just cannot keep Doncaster out of the news.
David Beckham was loaned to Preston early in his career and scored on his debut directly from a corner against Doncaster Rovers.

David Beckham scores from the half way line against Neil Sullivan now of Doncaster Rovers.

His next son is to be called Donny to celebrate his stay with Victoria in the Premier Inn, near the Keepmoat, home of the famous Doncaster Rovers.

Well two out of three are correct.

Our kids were named from their place of conception. Our Alley and Elaine don't seem to mind, but our Cortina's got a right chip on her shoulder.

He may have made his debut against us but he didn't score, I'm not having that. Look at that video - someone clearly heads it in at the back post :P

Is that David Moyes in the frame as well standing near the penalty spot?

I suppose I might as well make the obligatory "worth a punt" post about our managerial position.

An old git speaks.

When historians write about this era in 50 years time, they will look for examples of the Zeitgeist.

And they'll find Beckham.

A moderately talented footballer, good looking lad, a bit smarter than thick-as-pigshit, but not much, married to a talentless singer who looks like she's worth one.

If you were talking to men from Mars, how would you explain the fact that a person like that became the most famous man on the planet?

Tough, int it?

Unless you accept that we as a society have become infantilised and want the media to put up non-entities like Beckham as stars for us to idolise.

Good footballer ,not 'Moderately talented'
For couple of years he was up with the very best at the time. The media frenzy that followed him distracted from his footballing achievements/talent at times, while also promoting him when he was on the slide. But end of 98 to beginning of 02 football wise, he was quality.

"Moderately talented" and "a bit smarter than thick-as-pigshit" are two descriptions that do him a great disservice in my opinion, he is one of the best dead ball specialists I have ever seen in the sport, he had/has bags of ability and has proven it consistently throughout his career.

He's not an idiot either, he comes across as a fairly astute guy especially when it comes to building and maintaining the so-called 'Brand Beckham'.

Mmmm Beckham, cant dribble, wont take a player on, cant use his left foot, cant head a ball, cant tackle, cant score unless its a set piece.

Maybe he was average, maybe I know nothing. You decide.

Oh, good right foot though.

On the "moderately talented" thing.

I have a meeting with representatives of the Martian people later this weekend. I am trying to formulate a case to explain to them why Beckham is the most famous person on the planet.

Did he solve world poverty? Nope.
Did he secure world peace? Nope.
Did he find a cure for cancer? Nope.

Was he even a sportsman of historically exceptional quality? Nope. For a couple of years he was in the top 2 or 3 players in an England side that was about the 8th best in Europe and maybe the 12th best in the world.

See lads, I'm really struggling here. The Martians have told me that if they judge our culture to be pathologically obsessed with whatever w**k celebrity culture the media decides to ram down our f**king throats, they will exterminate us for the good of the Universe as a whole. Not looking good.

Mind, I would have put Beckham on a pedestal as a world class wit if he'd given their lass one on Del Trotter's manor.

Billy, is it a done deal that you're the one representing 'us' with the martians this weekend to decide our fate. As much as you clearly have a way with words, I'm not sure if that is enough in itself. Plus, is there any chance of postponing the meeting until after the fixtures have been released please - would like to get at least a look at them!

Of course you don't , it's Billy just trying to be contrary again. We all know that Beckham flashed that 'toothpaste smile' and walked into some of the greatest clubs on the planet without an ounce of talent. I'm sure he is either going senile or perhaps he may even be a Martian spy himself ?
Beckham may well have typified the 'spirit of the age' but he was also a damn good footballer never have I ever seen anyone describe him as simply ''average'' except by this one person. I suspect that once again this was once again an intellectual effort by Billy to stimulate a debate.

None of these had a career as long and also won championship medals in four different countries.  Maybe not the same magic but far more of a team player.

I don't think he's been lucky at all, he's made the very best of what he had, always ran his socks off, practiced dead balls and passing constantly until he became the best set piece taker, crosser, passer I've ever seen

Of course our Billy is being cheeky, but I understand his point about the culture of celebrity.  Why do we care about celebrities and what they do, who they marry, what parties they attend and if they get sick or have surgeries?  lurid fascination into other peoples lives who live differently from you and me?  And what about fascination with things like Angela Jolie's breasts?  haha, well you lot might, but I certainly don't and many people get preventative double mastectomies thinking it will prevent breast cancer in the future.  But does she have talent or just lucky enough to be the daughter of an actor and be attractive? Well the jury is out for me on all those counts. But back to Beckham...

IMO David Beckham was good no doubt,  and he worked hard and achieved a reputation as a talented footballer.  But it was after he married Posh that things started to cross over into that celeb category.  People put them on a pedestal (as they did themselves when they got married) and then the press frenzy took off, and Posh was quick to jump on the bandwagon and work the press, and use it to her (their) advantage.  Is she stupid? I'd say no, she is savvy and he is good looking enough, is a nice enough fellow, and talented enough to continue to pull the press and keep one step ahead to assure his (their) continued celebrity status.  I for one, would have respected him more if he had just remained a talented footballer rather than a trumped up underwear model, which he has become, sadly.

Any footballer with limited skills can add an extra dimention to his game by running around though. If Beckham was marked out the game, his world best crossing is stopped, he has nothing else to give. Try stopping Best Ronaldo etc and they will show you another way to combat the situation. Beckham for me was lucky and a one trick pony, vastly overated. Worlds best deadball delivery, that's all.

If it was that easy to stop him don't you think the managers around Europe would've done it??
