Our midfield was never the same when he left. Even Brian Stock could not reach his dizzy heights after his minder left. He is older i agree but he has experience in this division and hopefully we can sign him. He will be able to guide Furman and any young midfield players we can get. Lets hope now the cat is out the bag his signing happens and not just a worm to catch more season tickets.

I disagree. For me, we had a better midfield for 18 months when Oster replaced Wellens. Oster gave us a bit more unpredictable forward momentum. For a while in 2010 the midfield was quite excellent. We struck a balance between possession and rapid breaking beyond the midfield line that we rarely managed previously.

Which is not to denigrate Wellens. If he's anywhere near his old self, he'll be an excellent addition.

Wellens while quick thinking was never the fastest mover so maybe the years will have been kind to him..

Go on then ... here's one for the statto's and nerds... players who have had two stints at the club? Can't actually think of any off the top of my head.

Mark Wilson has had 3.

Jesus, Mark Wilson.

Can't get shot of him.

The Free Press today says Richie Wellens is out first target. Wellens and Furman centre mid sounds amazing!  :woohoo: :woohoo:

Worth a gamble without a doubt given he was one of best players to play to ever player for Rovers!

My son lives in Ipswich and he says that they were really impressed with his contribution last season to the point where they asked the Leicester about his availability.
I am a big fan of Wellens. In my view we have lacked someone to consistently make the killer pass since he left.
Welcome him back with open arms.

I think the question is "Is he better than Woods and Harper?"
Are you serious, please tell me that its a piss take.

Course its a piss take. Surprised that has to be explained.

I wrote an article for the fanzine last season about Rovers returning players, with a full list of appearances at that time. I am trying to attach it (Hope it is not too large)

Tommy Meagan came back after his spell in Finland

According to the Star a few weeks ago he may well be returning again to join the coaching team. This season despite not making the bench most games he was stood with Brian on the touchline dressed almost like a coach so it seems he has been helping out coaching and training since he came back. He started learning his coaching role under SOD too.

He looked like a coach when he played as well. It took him 30 seconds to get up to top speed and his turning circle was about 50 feet.

That's a bit unfair BST - in fact I reckon that's Gareth Taylor you are thinking of. Wilson was more like a train when he played - just went up and down in straight lines puffing.

I can't remember him outside of the centre circle, apart from one scuffed daisy cutter that somehow went in the net one time.

But Wellens? Yes please!

I take it you didnt mean he played like he had a cigar on, Wilts.

Strange I don't remember Willo's goal quite like that. This slagging off of a former player and a member of our coaching team is pathetic.
As for Wellens yes please.

Wellens would certainly help us with a bit more craft in midfield which has been lacking for a while. Agree that Wellens is not the total solution and as said Oster also brought a slightly different way of opening up teams and creating space.

I hop it comes off.

Hope it comes off, at the minute we've got Harper who's no where near good enough, Keegan likewise, and Syers and the youngsters, who'll have potential but are unproven in the championship.

From the Leicester Mercury - Still a year left on his contract

"Former City striker Dickov knows Wellens well from their time together during the Scot's second stint at the club from 2008-2010 and he is said to be keen to work with him again.

Doncaster is a club Wellens knows extremely well, having made 97 appearances for them between 2007-09 before making the £1million switch to City.

It is understood that preliminary discussions have already been made over a potential return to the Keepmoat Stadium for Wellens, but that Dickov is looking to spend as little as possible to do so.

Wellens still has one year left on his contract and it is not yet known whether or not he will be released from it, or whether Doncaster would be expected to pay a fee to acquire him.[/b]
Agreeing terms could also be a potential sticking point in the deal as Doncaster would not be able to match the wages that Wellens is currently on at City.

But with Dickov so keen to get Wellens on board, and his future at City seemingly over, it looks like it could be a deal which suits both parties."
