Lets just hope we get the pitch sorted. Signing Wellens would be as pointless as mark Wilson bringing his boots on a Saturday if we don't.

Great footballer if love to see him back here.

He'd be a great signing.

We'll need an experienced head such as his in the middle of the park if we're to have a good season.

Now all we need is a striker who would like to return for a second stint

We`ll have to dig him up then, unless he got cremated!

You'd have to dig him up first, Paul. He's brown bread. That said he couldn't be any worse...

Regarding Wellens, his game was never built around blistering pace so I don't see his age being an issue. With a year left on his deal at Leicester I wonder if they'd be prepared to pay some of his contract off to cut their wage bill which would help us to make up the difference.

Was this the guy that was paraded around OBV as was announced as "The Greatest ever player to step foot on the Belle Vue turf"

Had no idea he'd died. Feel a bit bad now. So, how about Presic (or similar). Hope he's not dead too.

He did - as a sub, never played for us again after that

Wellens for me is probably the best footballer I have seen at Donny for many many years. Very creative, tenacious and very difficult to get the ball off. As someone said above, his game was never based on pace so I am pretty sure that he can do a good job for us. He is a bit older but I do think that even if he plays 3 quarters of the games in a season he will be a considerable asset. Loved watching him play.

Who was the player who used to say that Wellens was the best player he played with and loved playing with him? Was it Copps or Oster, can't remember now.

Uros Predic? He must've been quite some player at the top of his game. Had a vicious shot on him.

As for worst players to make cameos for us, does anyone remember Dean Anton Williams (forward, not to be confused with Dean Paul Williams the goalkeeper who played in the same game)?

He played the first half of a match, I think at home to Darlo circa 1996 and was simply dreadful.

I've just realised, if it was '96 that makes it 17 years ago.

17 bloody years. Feels like yesterday. Can I join the queue for a mid-life crisis please?

Haha, the quiz question thread on Euro 96 made me feel old, most of those players retired at least 5 years ago!

I know, it's scary isn't it. there are young adults walking around who have never experienced that atmosphere of national euphoria that holding the tournament here generated. That is up until we were knocked out and the knuckle-draggers started smashing Volkswagens in the street!

Here's another one that cropped up the other day:

The lad sitting opposite me at work wasn't even born when Gazza wept in Italy!

Surely Prince Moncrieffe for his mid first half substitution where he kicked the crap out of the dressing room door at OBV?!

Go on then ... here's one for the statto's and nerds... players who have had two stints at the club? Can't actually think of any off the top of my head.

Seems we've generally had a good history with returning players. Billy Bridgewater (3x) and Billy Langham are two others from a while back.

I think Wellens is the obvious choice for us but worry that his wages will set a precedent that could make it more difficult for us in future wage negotiations with other players. As a one off, or with even him and a striker who is expensive, I think we can afford it.

Say what you want about Moncrieffe, he managed to score 8 goals in that team.
And then was switched to right back for some bizarre reason.

my reply would be, look how well Griffin did... and hes still going.
with the loss of Martin Woods, who, when fit could make superb passes and crosses, we do need someone who can do that again.. i just wonder if there wasn't a younger alternative we could get cheaper

I was two years old then. I'm the youngest in our office too. I can just about remember Brazil 94 and definitely Euro 96. Remember Dad was Home from work abroad for the Scotland game good fun.
