Free press saying Dickov is after him from Oldham, I think he would be a good signing from what I have seen of him but then again I haven't seen many of his games apart from when he played against us.

Given the above, can you then please tell me why you think he would be a good signing? This is a genuine question, not trying to be an arse! I have never see him play.

Hi saw him play against us 3 times last season and he was a rock in their defence, you only have to look on their forum to see how highly latics fans rate him, they state they would be gutted if he left.

A tall brute of a centre back...havent we got that already in Jones & McCombe? A cultured Matt Mills/Matt Kilgallon type player would be nice

As I remember him he was a big brute but was also very mobile as well with some speed which is where we have the problem now. A good signing if we can get him.

I like him, very good player and really impressed me when we played them.  Possibly the only other centre half in this league I thought matched Jones in the air.

Is this straight from the horses mouth? (Dickov), or beacuse it's our local paper, are the Free Press just putting two and two together, and because he played for Oldham it's an obvious link?

Probably this. Papers always do it when a manager goes to a new club - easy story, or non-story often.

Given the Oldham fans' track record of rating players that probably means he is dogshit and we should steer well clear.

For me the type of player we need, played at a higher level, physical presence, quite quick, very solid, young enough to develop,he could do a very good job for us at Championship level and he won't cost much.

He's never really played at a higher level but I agree with the rest of your post Sammy. I'd be happy to see him here.

If we had the best central defence partnership in League 1 last season (which is what i've read on this forum many times) why would we want to bring in another League 1 standard centre half?

Don't make any sense to me. Elliot Ward, Shackel, Matt Mills, that would be great. However, we can't afford any of those. But do we want another of what we've already got? Not in my opinion

Is he League 1 standard only?. Was James Coppinger only League 2 standard. He might just be a diamond that needs polishing. Anyhow, DRFC recognised pairing in central defence got lucky with injuries and suspension last season, why not recruit another just in case. Oh I know there were others last year that could have moved position to cover for absences, but, if club can afford another recognised central defender, who has some pace (  neither of the regular pairing have ) then I am for it.

Just cause that's where he played last year doesn't mean that's his standard, look at hoolihan, howson, snodgrass etc, they all played in league 1 and are now in the premier league.
If everyone thought like yourself nobody would buy anyone from the leagues below.

We need to IMPROVE in several area's, central defence being one area. I've seen Rob Jones play in the Championship before, and when I saw him IMO he wasn't good enough.
I don't think this is the answer. I know no-one is a one man team but Oldham hardly pulled up any trees with him last season

When you saw him it was more than likely against Billy Sharp who made a t**t out of some very good defenders.

Even then, you have to take into consideration the high defensive line Scunthorpe played while Jones was in that defence. We played a deep line to compensate for his - and of course McCombe's - lack of pace.

How do you know he's only a league one standard defender? Just because he played at Oldham? If he was to come in he may strengthen us at the back even more because he's got power and pace something we haven't got at the back at the minute.

I saw Tim Ryan playing for us in 1997 and he was nowhere near good enough for Tier 4. He bloody well was in 2003 though.

He is 24 years old so still has plenty to learn, in fact the next couple if seasons should define him as a player. He played in a poor side last year, but still managed to perform well when I saw him. Big, strong and with a good turn of pace, playing alongside an experienced centre half such as Jonesy he could really come into his own.

I do think we need another centre back, but I would be more concerned that we get better protection in the midfield. I think the defence we have could cope pretty well with most teams In this division

To be honest I think we need improvement all over the pitch. As it is the defence is very slow. It's not too bad against long ball merchants like we faced the majority of last season, but I genuinely believe we will be punished by quicker more capable strikers.
We do need to improve in the middle with a decisive passer who can make goals as we relied a bit too much on Cotts last year. We could also use a ball playing anchor in the middle. But it all comes down to affordability at the end of the day.

We had a good solid defence lasdt season that could only be hurt by pace but to counter this sat pretty deep, although the midfield wasn't brilliant at times the way we set up & the keepmoat pitch didn't help uat all. We were better suited to playing away from home on the counter. Any player offering something different /better to what we already have will be most welcome.

In my opinion we can't afford to defend as deep this season, things we got away with in the league below,we won't at this level with the standard of strikers,if we play Jones/McCombe we would have to carry on being really deep defenders of the ball,no doubt they are a good partnership, for me it doesn't hurt to have a few more options, and a quicker centre-half would give us that, plus Rob Jones it would be a big ask to have another totally injury free year like he did last season,McCombe had a few niggles last season as well, and i do think we have developed a massive dependence on Rob always being fit, which isn't healthy, when he didn't play it was a bit panic stations,we can't cope what are we going to do!!,luckily he hardly missed any action, our back four reminds me of the Leeds one when they came up,physically very good but slow on the turn, the only way to keep this partnership, would be for us to sign two very quick full backs who would tuck in all the time to protect them and never go forward, which probably wouldn't work out.

An ideal signing for me M'Voto for what we need, something to prove will want to work his way back up to premier league level, just because Oldham struggled, you can't put it down to just one link in the defence, there's only so much one player can do,Rob Jones came from a similar team, look how he's worked out, along with Baxter a player i'd love to see join us.

Do the posters who think we don't need another centre back think we are going to get by with just Jones and McCombe all season?
We are going to need a lot more strength in depth in certain positions. Centre half definitely being one of them.

I don't think we can afford Jones and McCombe together.

However, 2 players I think will make good CB companions for Rob Jones. Quinn and Spurr.

We know Spurrs done it before and IMO I think he'd be better suited to CB, than full back at Championship level. I understand Quinn has also played there before and if he applies himself as well as he did last season then I think he could make a cracking centre half.

In my opinion and I accept I may be in a minority here but I think that that both Mccombe and Jones can play at the championship level

And I agree with Donny baz rover that Quinn and spurr would do better as well as freeing up husband to play left back

I would much rather us get natural centre halves in rather than putting Spurr and Quinn in there, it's okay for the occasional cover but for long term I think keep players like them in their preferred position.

They probably can, just not together.

We will be ripped apart without pace at the back next season, which neither Jones nor McCombe can provide.
