Try adrianflux insurance on line. They worked out by far the cheapest when my lad took out his first car insurance at age 17. They specialise in young drivers insurance.

Seriously, the cheapest car I found to insure for my daughter was a Ford KA, but even that came in at £1200 for her first year, it made it cheaper for me to be a named driver, even though I never actually drove the car
I found a vauxhall corsa to be about the cheapest to insure for young drivers (get a 1.2 engine). As already posted, it brings premiums down by naming both parents as "named drvers" on the car, even if they dont use it.Other things to consider; fully comp quotes can sometimes work out surprsingly lower than "third party fire and theft".Buying a 5 door car can often work out cheaper than a 3 door (classed as a family car).
The average cost is over £1200 which is ridiculous. In some parts of the country it's much higher (like Doncaster for example). I don't think it's right that youngsters should have to pay so much and that driving should just be for the rich. Youngsters have a tough enough time of it as it is e.g.Tuition feesExorbitant house pricesPicking up the bill for previous government's profligacyNo jobs despite a university educationYou try getting a job if you can't drive. makes it much harder.
My heart truly bleeds for them, it really does.
Good job you are all not in Ireland. Insurance costs ASTRONOMIC.
