It's a hard one for any manager,do you pick the talented player who won't track back and do his share?,or do you put a less talented player in who fits into the system better?
I Ask this question thinking of Dave Cotterill mainly but there are others,as you've probably picked up from comments i've made on other posts,i'm a big admirer of the assists he provides, but i'm thinking more and more he doesn't fit into how Paul Dickov wants his team to play, the 'High up the Pitch Pressing Game'.
Under Dean Saunders his approach was, have a solid team with a few touches of quality who can win you the game, now this worked at League one level, would it have worked at Championship level?,it's a question that can't be answered one hundred per cent because he didn't finish the job.
Now under Dickov it is more about 'The Team' rather than individuals, which normally i would applaud, pressing them high forcing the mistakes, except i don't think he has the right sort of players to play that game,we haven't got the legs in there to do the job,in midfield some weeks he could have upto three wingers in the side, for me chasing people around all day is not Duffy,Coppinger or Cotterill's game,it's all well and good running round like headless chickens, then losing the game in the last five minutes,i think we are playing the wrong style for the players we have.
For me keep solid, use the ball better, keep your positions and hit on the break,by the time Cotterill gets into a decent position, this 'High Energy Pressing Game' is knocking the quality out of him,let the work horses Work and the Quality Play, that's what got us here in the first place.
This is the side i'd play against Barnsley
Turnbull
Quinn McCullough Khumalo Yun
Furman
Cotterill Duffy
Wellens
Brown Robinson
I Think Wabara is going to be a good player, but for this game i'd go for Quinn's conventional full back play,if Yun goes forward, then you've still got a solid three with Furman just in front.
There's enough creativity in midfield, plus Brown to hold the ball and Robinson's pace,we've got to go there solid and hit them on the break, don't press them high up the field, let them make the running, and use our extra quality to hurt them, when they do.
We will win this 2-1 for me,they're Danger player is Paddy McCourt,he's unconventional and likes to drift about, stopping him is the key to us winning.
