I mentioned today that I expected him to take one of the CM berths and Syers the other with Wellens and Furman dropping out.

I can only assume his injury is still hampering his full fitness

He's played several reserve games and even had a couple of brief appearances, but Dickov won't play him even when the opportunity presents itself- as in the second half v Ipswich or yesterday.

When you consider that a clearly less than fit Brown was fielded, I don't think it is a lack of fitness. I just think Dickov doesn't rate him and realises he dropped a huge bollock when he signed him.

How bad could he be? I know he might not fit the English game, but he needs more of a chance imo.

Still think same with john spicer, although I have since been proved wrong. I also thought he looked promising and just needed more of a chance central not thrown out wide

I think he only signed for 2 years. If he's not given a chance we may as well have not bothered, its not as he was given a long contract so that he could be developed!

The only way he is going to prove himself is if he's given the chance I think when Dickov does give him a chance let him have a go in a 3 man centre midfield where he is sat in front of the back four. Because at least that way if he does struggle to adapt to the pace of the game it will be easier for him having that extra support in there rather than at Charlton where he was just alongside Wellens.

He was Dickov's first signing as well very early on, i was assuming he'd be a key player for us.

Do reserve games not count as giving him a chance?  PD has watched De Val perform in the reserves and presumably doesn't think he's good enough.  They're the decisions he's paid to make.

It's also his job to make decisions on which players we sign.

Don't you think it's a poor reflection on his capability to do that if he signs a player who, by his own admission he has been watching for 2 years or more, and then five months down the line decides that he's not good enough?

Players aren't always signed for the here and now. They are signed to be developed. It takes a year usually for a foreign player to settle over here.

Who's to say the reason he isn't playing is because Dickov thinks he is not good enough? It maybe down to fitness or another reason but we don't know and people are just assuming the reason is that Dickov thinks he isn't good enough.

And you expect perfection from your manager?

Point me to a manager that has never signed a player who turned out to be a failure.

1) Dickov tracked him for 2 years, so knew all too well what he can and cant do long before he came to the Rovers

2) De Val was like a Rolls Royce in pre-season until he picked up his injury.  Silky smooth and linked play like no other player I've seen at the club.  The closest in this country to the way he plays is Gary Medal, I reckon.  Nothing flashy but very effective at keeping the ball moving.

3) In preseason De Val's pass completion rate was 100%.  He just never ever gave the ball away.

I still think he isnt fully over the injury (and remember friendly/reserve team matches are fine for rehab work), or its had an effect on his confidence in the tackle.

The 100% pass completion was against Motherwell. He gave it away a few times at Retford.

Paul , I missed the Retford game, so apologies for that.

I saw the Frickley, Rossington and Motherwell games, and cant recall him giving it away once in those.  Anyway, the point is we had a midfield who seemed incapable of stringing a couple of 5 yard passes together on show yesterday, and I expected De Val to feature.

I tried to do a bit of research on De Val as I thought I remembered reading that he'd had a serious injury previously.  Apparently not if my research so far is correct.  But interestingly, I came across this thread from an Oldham forum which brings together topics from a few of the threads on here.

Interesting, a lot of what they say on PD is happening here bad fitness, lack of goal chances and lots of goals conceded.

They all rate De Val as well, must be injury.

I don't remember saying that.

The point was more "what did Dickov see in the two years that he was watching him that has disappeared into the ether in the past 5 months?" If, indeed it is the case that Dickov doesn't think he's good enough, which at this point is nothing but an assumption put forward on this forum.

No pib, the point is that you have decided that Dickov is no good and you will point out every failing.

So, if choosing players is his job, and the quality if the players he chooses reflects on his ability to do his job, what do you reckon about Turnbull, Wellens, Khumalo? What do reckon about the side that he put together that looked like decent mid-table contenders before the injuries kicked in?

Point me to the posts where you consider Dickov to be a good manager...

I don't think he's a particularly good manager on the evidence of what I've seen so far. It doesn't mean that I won't accept anything he does well. I do believe Turnbull and Khumalo to have been very good signings, but it's hardly relevant to what has been posted on most of those threads.

I'll be as delighted as anybody if he turns it around. I just haven't seen too much so far to make me that optimistic that he will. Sorry that differs from what you think, but that's life innit?

That's grand spadge. Took a bit of getting to, but that's all part of the fun.

Just out of interest, back in July, what would you have considered to be a successful outcome to this season?

Haha. Could you be a bit more condescending as you go please?
