nah I like this one

http://i4.gazettelive.co.uk/incoming/article6660664.ece/ALTERNATES/s2197/JS31882259-6660664.jpg

However there is another that shows a players arm away from his body at a free kick but you can't tell at what point of the kick

(sorry RD at least I've managed to link to the picture I mean)

Great pic.  I think that explains a lot.

To me, it appears that the defender has made an instinctive movement to protect himself from being hit by the ball.  However, it does also look like the ball would have otherwise have struck him at the base of the neck, left shoulder perhaps?  In that case, maybe the ref thought that the handball made no difference to the trajectory of the ball?

Put that with the one time real time view the officials get, and you can see why a penalty wasn't given.  Had the handball been in the gap between two defenders in the wall, or above his head, then I would have expected a penalty.

Sometimes you get them, sometimes you don't.

Hmmm they thought that they 'nearly made up half the crowd'
Jeez the stuff in that report 'they were there for the taking' etc etc. Gets my award for the most biased report for a long long time.
Thank God the reporter didn't write T.L.O. whilst having his w**kfest over their massive away attrndance

This is the penalty. Ball just about to make full contact with the hand. Had his hand not been there, it wouild have been destined for goal.

Ok the tops of his arms were by his sides but his lower arms and hands were well out. I stick by my decision from Saturday. Penalty. Ref right in line with it too but looking at the other end of the wall:

Looking at this pic Mike, I would agree it should have been a penalty, but as you say the ref isn't looking directly at the ball.

One that got away I think....

Don't we have linesman for that though. Question is what/where is the lino looking at.

Looks like a penalty to me too

Assuming there was a crowd of players in line with the wall, I guess the lino may have been unsighted too?

Only problem with the Lino is he should be looking across the last line of defence for offside, if there were players behind the wall he could be forgiven for watching them. If not however, you're right, he is supposed to be an extra pair of eyes helping the ref.
