Top 5?  I dunno, but I have a clear top 3:

The Good the Bad and the Ugly,
Life of Brian
Brief Encounter

All completely different!

I don't like 3D movies, it is like watching several 2D films in layers, rather than solid 3D.  Plus it gives me a headache like motion sickness.

I don't like how film makers shoot scenes that will supposedly look better in 3D - in 2D they are easy to spot yet do nothing for the film, in fact IMHO they detract from it.

A Short Film about Killing

Responsible for the finest line in film comedy in The Parole Officer.

Steve Coogan, brainy, nerdy parole officer trying to stall for time after the while talking to Jon Henshaw's hard man

Henshaw:"What's on the video?"

Coogan: "It's A Short Film about Killing by Krzysztof Kieślowsk. It's a simple story about a man who kills someone in the heat of the moment and it then follows the whole legal process culminating in the man's conviction and state execution, which is just a futile as the murder. And that's the point really. That killing is wrong."

Henshaw: "I've seen it. It's shit."

Ooh. Touchy.

I was genuinely interested in how you knew that the special effects were only worth seeing in 3D, unless you'd also seen the film in 2D.

Plenty of reviews I've seen say it is pretty spectacular even in 2D. But I assumed you must have seen both to come to a conclusion.

Too many and all for varying reasons or themes

The Shining is well up there though

For an old classic, The Third Man is awesome as is Wizard of Oz.

Lord of the rings are ace, so is Up

Exorcist

Django in recent years

I could go on and on

Thought Gravity was excellent myself. Properly gripping, really well-made despite having a really thin plot. The fact it won 7 Oscars despite being as far from Oscar-bait as it's possible to get speaks volumes to its quality in my mind. Really enjoyed all the Oscar nominations I've seen this year actually, Dallas Buyers' Club is probably my personal favourite, although I haven't seen 12 Years A Slave even though everyone's talking about it.

I was to tempted by this little homage to the Shining... It's the pattern from the carpet of the Overlook hotel.

Then I thought, probably not for me. It's a nice idea though.

Amelie?  I would say the opposite of mushy BST ;)

That reminds me, my 5th film would be The English Patient...

It kind of shows up the pointlessness of the Oscars, that Amelie received nothing higher than a nomination for best foreign language film. The film itself, the cinematography, Tatou's performance and Yann Tiersen's soundtrack are all-time classics and will be remembered as such in 100 years time.

See, how do you 'rate' a good film?

I watched the Usual Suspects, The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Good Will Hunting for the first time the other week, I'd heard they were 'absolutley fantastic' films, don't get me wrong, they were enjoyable films and I would recommend them to people who haven't seem them, but, they weren't as 'compelling' (as they say) as I thought they would be.

I'm wanting to watch films such as; The Shawshank Redemption, Good Morning Vietnam (to name a couple), as I have Netflix, again, I've heard they're 'absolutley fantastic' films, but are they really compelling!?

Anyway, as someone above has said "It's impossible to pick my favourite 5 films as it changes a lot", but some good films I have seen over the years that are in my head are:

Rat Race
Taking of Pelham 123
The Simpsons Movie  :P
Borat
Deja Vu
Derailed (starring Clive Owen & Jennifer Aniston)
Taken

I thought gravity was really good. But I'm a bit of a geek. Prisoners was gripping. But as an F1 fan I loved rush. Even though I knew the story I thought it was brilliant.

I liked Gravity.  I thought it was very good, but I am a bit of a sci-fi nerd, hence my top five are.....

1) Star Wars Episode V : The Empire Strikes Back
2) Star Wars Episode IV : A New Hope
3) The Thing (The John Carpenter one, not the recent prequel of the same name (which is actually half decent)
4) Raiders of the Lost Ark
5) Jaws

Sit me down in front of any of those 5 and you wont hear a peep from me for 2 hours +

Rush would have been good if I didn't drink a jug full of Pimms whilst watching it and having to dash off to the toilet every 2 seconds missing the good bits....

I don't think I could name a top 5 if I am honest, I am not a massive movie fan, I don't have the attention span to sit still and watch something, any film that requires concentration on the plot line is normally not for me.

Most of the films on this thread I have never seen, one of my old colleagues was going to write me a list of must see films so I could broaden my horizons beyond chick flicks but that never came about.

I might crack open my One Direction movie tonight.

Rob,

Many people, well nerdy types will tell you Star Wars isn't Sci Fi. It's a high fantasy story that happens to be set in outer space.

It has a lot more in common with the Lord of the Rings, dragon like creatures, magic (the force), goblin-like creatures than something like 2001, which is real Sci Fi imagining the impacts of plausible new technology and the first human encounter with alien intelligence.

In that respect Gravity isn't really Sci Fi either as it is set in a present-day, amongst technology that already exists.

Anyway, just sayin.

The other thing Star Wars owes a lot to is WWII adventure films.

For a start the empire is Nazi Germany. The officers of the death star, the ones Vader (doesn't he play for Schalke 04?) likes to strangle with magic wouldn't look out of place in any scene from Downfall. A bit of trivia, George Lucas says the Word Darth is a variation of Dark while the German word Vater means father.

The attack on the death star is the Damnbusters raid, and the threat of the death star is basically Heroes of Telemark. They actually built Ti Fighters and At Ats in Bavaria, if you look closely you can see the BMW badges.

Anyway, what ever Star Wars is, it isn't really Sci Fi.

Actually, RD, did you ever see the short movie Lucas made to sell the concept to studios?  All the x-wing/TIE battles were spliced together b/w footage from the Korean war and WWII.

Yep and it looked terrible apparently, it gave the studio a bit of a scare when he first showed it to them.

The Thing is a cracking Sci Fi film BTW. Well... Sci Fi Horror but the genres often crossover.

My five Sci Fi movies today...

2001 a Space Odyssey
Bladerunner
Alien
War of the Worlds (Spielbergs excellent reinvention)
Silent Running

The one film i've seen in the last 10 yeats that jumped into my head straight away was The Wrestler. Mickey Rourke was immense in it and it brought out every emotion in me.

Funny, sad, poignant, serious...it had it all
