He did. Did he not also score against France when South Africa beat them or am I imagining this?

Not a player, but a manager; George Raynor.
Managed Sweden to the semifinals of the World Cup in 1950, eighteen years later he manages us.

Didn't Brazil beat Sweden 5 2 in the final not semi in 1958?

Brazil didn't win the 1950 World Cup, so no.

Raynor led Sweden to third place in the 1950 World Cup (in Brazil) and to the Final in 1958 when they lost 5-2 to Brazil. He also remains the last Englishman to coach a team to an Olympic Gold Medal- Sweden in 1948 in London.

His spell in charge of Rovers (August 1967 to November 1968) was his longest as manager of an English Football League club. In fact, the only other League club he managed was Coventry City. He was the first managerial appointment of chairman Frank Wilson, who had taken over from the "much-loved" Hubert Bates at the end of the 1966-67 season.
