If you still do all your supermarket shopping......

If you still do all your supermarket shopping at one of the major supermarkets then you need to cop yourself on. Lidl and Aldi are much cheaper and offer excellent quality produce.

Excuse me. I don't think so. I've been shopping at Lidl for many years. However, at the start of this year 49% of shoppers hadn't used a food discounter. Now if you do the maths that would mean that aprox. 49% of readers of this forum don't shop at food discounters. My thread was aimed at these people.

You seem to have formed the opinion that nearly everyone does. Take some advice and do some research before posting next time.

Handy if you are near one or have a car, as I have neither I'm afraid it's still Asda home deliveries for me.

Redwine, I assume you are referring to me. I am merely doing my bit to help with what is probably the biggest monthly out going for most people. Lets take an example.
Lets say a family of 4 spend £150 per week on supermarket shopping. Now if they could reduce this bill by 30% they would save £45 per week which equates to £2340 per annum. A not insignificant saving.

I am doing my bit for society out of the goodness of my heart. When was the last time you did anything that benefited your fellow man?

Jucy. Are you a social outcast? Don't you know anyone that has a car? I'm sure you must do. From reading your posts on this forum you seem like quite a sociable person and I wouldn't be at all surprised if you knew at least one person that has a car that does all their shopping at a major supermarket. Have you not heard of car sharing? What you need to do is show them the error of their ways and offer to give them the delivery money you are currently giving Asda as petrol money.

This way you will both be quids in. You will also find that the value they put on your friendship will rise a lot as they will now be considerably richer.

If you are a social outcast then there is always public transport or taxis. Either way you are throwing money away by doing all your shopping at Asda.

If none of the above solutions solve the problem, please feel to give me further details as to why my solutions won't work and I'll do my best to get things sorted for you. I am totally confident that I will be able to do so.

You do realise that unless the owner of the car has business insurance, what you are suggesting is making the car owners insurance invalid, and thus against the law?

The world has gone mad. If giving someone the money to cover the cost of petrol for letting you have a ride to the supermarket is breaking the law then yes I do advocate breaking the law. I don't know who came up with such a stupid law but would be amazed if it wasn't the Labour party.

That said, let's come into the real world. I suggest you do an experiment. Ring the police up and ask them what would be their reaction if you were to report someone for the offence. Tell them that you suspect someone of regularly committing this offence and ask them what would be their response if you could offer them evidence that it was happening.

I dare you. If they don't threaten you with prosecution for wasting police time I would be amazed.

Also I think it is very remiss of you not to mention the fact that you are a taxi driver. You are obviously trying to scare the gullible into paying taxi fares instead to keep you and your mates in business.

I'm not trying to scare anyone Mick, it's a fact that insurance for social, domestic and pleasure use does not cover use for "hire and reward" you are trying to get people to unwittingly drive atound with invalid insurance

If I'd scrolled through this thread with the usernames covered up, I reckon I could've had a pretty good stab at guessing exactly who was involved.

I've rung the police putting the hypothetical case I gave you and also mentioned the 'hire and reward' aspect you mention. This was their response. They told me that because the driver was also going shopping then they hadn't been 'hired' for reward. So there would not be a case for investigating any further as no law had been broken. They also told me to get a life and to stop bothering them with such triviality.

One bit of that is true at least.

The bit where you are told to get a life...

Look, all I'm trying to do is help people keep more money in their pocket. it would help if others could back off with the diversionary tactics and just congratulate me for being so helpful. It is a fact that I am an expert in all aspects of family finance so I felt it would be wrong of me to keep all this useful information to myself.

Luckily for you all there will be further advice on how to improve your finances just by following my expert advice.

Now I would be grateful if those of you that have found this thread useful (I'm sure there must be many of you) could form an orderly queue and thank me.

I'd start looking for another job if I were you. That is unless you are already on the minimum wage. Thanks to Aldi and Lidl, Tesco will continue to lose market share so will have to cut costs. What is their biggest cost? Wages. Don't expect your wages to be going up anytime soon.

Yup, you got me, I'm a people hating social outcast.

I also ask no favours from anyone.. But that's just me.

I also live a £17.00 taxi fair away from the nearest Aldi. Believe me I know the exact price from times I have booked a taxi to the train station before the bus run begins.

My brother doesn't drive, neither does my sister or my mother, son and daughter come to that.... My daughter in law does, but they work as does my brother and sister in law..

When I worked I used to buy daily, being loyal to the coop and getting the dividend. I also shopped daily as I could only carry home what could go on the handle bars of my bike. Truth be told it was horrible. You can't shop like that, I never had enough money for food and bills, it was always either or.. Cupboards and fridge empty, no store cupboard.. You get my drift.

Then when I got ill and had to leave work even shopping like that was no longer an option, so I finally looked into internet shopping. For me it is perfect, I can get it delivered for £1.00 (the last time you could get the bus to Lynn for £1. I was around 17..)
I do a two week shop at a time, I never get tempted to buy crap and we eat better than we have ever done AND I'm up to date on my bills.

I know it would be even better if I could get to aldi but for me Asda is blessing enough for now.

It's a shame I don't live near you as I would be quite happy to take you to Aldi for free! But then that's just the type of guy I am.

Out of interest how come Asda are only charging you £1 delivery? I thought it was more like £2.50 to £5 depending on value of shop and when you have it delivered.
