Just listening to Radio Sheffield and they had a bit on about Ernie, apparently he's suffering from dementia these days

Ernie Moss has Pick's Disease.

I would like to go to the Chesterfield game to take part in the events, but may not be able to make it.

Ernie Moss was my first Rovers hero :scarf: I think him and Dougie scored 17 goals each one season in the early eighties about the time of the CIL shirt

Picks disease a form of pre senile dementia probably
a contributory factor will have been heading the ball repeatedly

best memory personally Ernie attempted an overhead kick at the town end. I was sat in the little North Stand & instead of completing the overhead he fell backwards & ended up on his backside

He brings back many happy memories of the 1983/84 promotion season. A proper old fashioned striker. Sad to hear and I wish him all the best.

That news has really upset me. Ernie was an honest, hard, fair professional of the old school. This quote from his Wiki page says it all.

Quote
"For me competing was all about the pride and dignity of honest endeavour, - and winning wasn't all about riches and rewards, it was about preserving ones sporting integrity, it was about honour."

750 appearances and nearly 250 goals. And probably as many set up for other strikers. What a record!

It was a privilege watching him that one season. Nous, bravery, selflessness and honesty. I can't remember him ever committing a bad foul. And he'd have rather hung up his boots than dive or simulate. They don't make many like him these days.

I hope he has a dignified and painless last few years. He deserves it.

 :that:
Not the most mobile striker we've had but always gave 100%.
He certainly played a big part in our promotion season. A joy to watch and maybe some of today's superstars could learn a thing or two about dignity and sportsmanship from him.

Who knows, but I guess it is just coincidence.  Picks Disease is quite rare fortunately, but a bugger when you get it :(

Wiki only mentions one former footballer who suffered from Pick's Disease. Kevin Moore, the former Grimsby and Southampton player who died in 2013.

A bucket collection would probably raise a fair bit from both sets of supporters.
I'm sure that he won't be very well off and the money raised would help his wife's expenses. If this is not possible/legal, then maybe a collection for mind or Age UK.
At least it would recognise Ernie's contribution to both teams.

How sad, he & Duggie were awesome that season, what he lacked in mobility he more than made up for in commitment & guts, proper old school centre forward who was a pleasure to watch, all the very best to him.

Robbie Savage's dad had Pick's disease, perhaps it might be worth asking if he'd like to help out somehow, maybe in a charity match if we can get one arranged?

Ernie was not only a player noted for his heading ability; he would stick his head where most people wouldn't stick their foot. And if he got t**tted, he'd shake his head and get on with the game. And throw himself into the next challenge.

The nearest we've had in recent years is Chris Brown. Similar football intelligence. Similar bravery. But Ernie had a stronger physique. His body took 20 years and 750 matches worth of battering while leading the line, and he barely picked up an injury on the way.

The thing that amazes me is that, when he played for us he was 34 or 35. He was a pro at the very end of his career. I'd always assumed that after he left us, that was him done. But no - he played another 150 league matches and scored another 50 goals after he left us. He must have been made of teak. Which is why it's so upsetting to hear that he's got this illness. If it can happen to Ernie, none of us are safe.

Nearly 250 career goals and not one penalty is some record. I wonder how many of the 250 were headers.

Sad to hear.
Ern was one of my first ever heroes.

It would be nice if we could do something when we play them in a few weeks.

Very sad for Ernie & his family. I doubt 'endless' headers have little to do with the onset of his condition, it's just one of those 'unfair things' life throws at certain people. As BST has said, a painless & dignified end is what I too would wish him. Well played Ernie.

My wife was diagnosed with Pick's in 2012, its a particularly nasty form of dementia.  I hope that Ernie has a dignified end but this may be difficult and will be dependent on what care can be provided for him.

One group who are doing great research into the condition are Manchester Neurological Research Trust.  Anyone wishing to donate can do so at https://www.justgiving.com/MNRT

When we play at their ground, we should have a minutes applause in the 8th minute to salute his shirt number.
