Their drinking sessions must have been prolific. I heard they did 12 bars every night.

I've seen The Fall live four or five times. Every time they have been superb. Best was at a place in Brum whose name escapes me, but it was circa This Nation's Saving Grace.

The Beat at Warwick Uni in my student days was a top gig.

I don't remember one that stood out particularly, but I was really fortunate that where I grew up we had a great progressive radio station that played new music from the UK and US, and so the local clubs (dives really) booked these groups in early. So my favorite concerts were the ones I saw at those places.  We saw many, many groups before they became really big, and you just knew by how good they were, that you were seeing something special.  Amazing really that we saw The Police, U2, Dire Straits, The Pretenders, The Boomtown Rats, Joe Jackson and The Talking Heads all before they got famous in small, dark, dirty venues where you didn't even want to drink out of the glasses.

There were many others concerts since then that have been fab as well, but those were my favorites.

Sounds like Doncaster's very own 'Outlook' in the 70s

Oasis at City of Manchester stadium years back.
Courteeners last year at Leeds festival were just unbelievable.
kasabian at Doncaster Dome last year i think?
Enjoyed Faithless at the dome too.

Seen faithless twice at the dome
First was a full on Saturday night rave
The second was a bit more chilled out on maybe a Monday night
Both times they were brilliant

Would the place in Brum have been The Powerhouse?
Sunday, 20 October 1985   Powerhouse, Birmingham

Copped It / Bombast / Couldn't Get Ahead / What You Need / Cruiser's Creek / The Man Whose Head Expanded / Petty Thief Lout / Dktr Faustus / I Am Damo Suzuki / Gut of the Quantifier / Kicker Conspiracy / Spoilt Victorian Child / 2 x 4

Supported by the Jeffrey Lee Pierce Quartet. £3.50 advance, £4 on the door.

A close 2nd was the chap who won stars in their eyes as Chris De Burgh performing in the Asda car park. Possibly for something like Children In Need. Obviously you tend to over glamorise details in your memory but I believe Samantha Mumba and A1 were also in the star-studded line-up.
That actually was Chris de Burgh

Saw the fall last night at the 6 music festival - I was disappointed in them though.

The Eagles in the Feijenoord Stadium ca 2005
Dire Straits in the Rode Hal in Kerkrade (reasonably small venue) ca 1980
The North Sea Jazz festival in The Hague 1982-86 - absolutely huge
Procul Harum in Oxford ca 1973

Does Riverdance count?

Also not a gig as such, but the musical We Will Rock You in the West End is truly brilliant

Belfast gets quite a lot of good lineups and am looking out for something. Van Morrison is doing an open air gig in Cypress Avenue (one of his famous songs) but that will probably be impossible to get tickets for.

It could well have been. £4 to get in. Those were the days!

EDIT. Pretty sure it was. I remember them opening with a blistering rendition of Copped It. I went with a bunch of people, some of whom were so-so about The Fall before that gig. They were all sold by the end!

Their line up is totally different to when I last saw them. The last few albums have been real "curate's egg" affairs.

I believe Scanlon, Burns and Steve Hanley were as much The Fall as MES. They lost something for me after the big split up in 1998.

Depeche Mode  the band I was in backed them many years ago in Newcastle before they were famous, stayed at the same b/b hotel as them as well and got totally ratted with them  after the gig.

Kin ell

I'm getting old and the memory is going. I forgot about the Chicago Jackmasters House Tour gig at Sheffield Uni in 1986 or 87. Some of the gods of house music when it was still fresh and new. Daryl Pandy, Marshall Jefferson, Frankie Knuckles et al.
Nice.

Forget to mention the Princes Trust Concert Hyde Park 1996
Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues
Alannis Morissette
Bob Dylan with Ronnie Wood and Al Kooper
The Who - Quodrophenia with Dave Gilmour and Paul Gadd
Eric Clapton
Not a bad line up for about £8 I think
Best of all a lady who I took down had friends who lived and worked in The Chelsea Hospital, who we stayed with  for the weekend, so also got a free tour round and  met a few of the Chelsea Pensioners

A lad I used to play with as a ten year old ended up as the bassist for Groove Armada.

No big f***ing claim to fame there then...

EDIT:
Just Googled him and found that he also played bass on John Squire's first solo LP.

Radiohead at South Park. Although the pub with £1a pint Kronenberg all day might have helped.

All right then. The lad I sat next to in Maths lessons at Danum ended up being the keyboard player with an early 80's band called 'The Europeans', and, after them, took Fish's spot as lead singer in Marillion. He's still their lead singer to this very day. Lives Oxford way now.

He had two drop dead gorgeous sisters too......... Lived in Intake on Avoca Ave or Road or some name like that they did.

BobG

PS Fred Waring. Anyone else remember that bugger at Danum?

I first saw Van Morrison at Nostell Priory in 1984 and he was absolutely brilliant. Did a few numbers with the (Robbie Robertsonless) The Band on the Saturday evening and then his own on the Sunday when he played for around 2 hours. I have seen him a few times since and yes he can be err tempermental, he struggled to play for an hour at the Albert Hall and refused to encore!

Nostel Priory 84 was the one raided by the police, I had gone in the works van and was just driving out when they were driving in to smash the place up!!! Anyone else there?

My best mate's brother was the lawyer for the Oliver-Dawson side in the Saxon court case. Pretty sure he got more money out of it than they did, it went on for years.
