Best British Boxer of All Time
« on May 19, 2015, 09:28:28 am by BillyStubbsTears »
Was looking on the EPSN Top 50 Boxers of All Time list the other day. There was just ONE a British boxer on it.

Without looking, fight fans, who do you reckon it was?

I would say it has to be Henry Cooper. Surprised there aren't one or two more in the lighter weights.

Cooper's not in the top 50. Couldn't be anywhere near really since he was never a World Champ.

Calzaghe, Steve Collins (not Brirish admittedly), Lennox and Naz are the best I've seen in 20 years of watching boxing.

All NO. You're all too focussed on the modern era.

I'd argue it was William "Iron" Hague from Mexborough in the early 1900s. He was the first British Heaveyweight champion and trained by none other than my great great grandad Frank. I'm not sure ESPN know much about him though!

I was going to say William Hague too, but I was thinking of the other one.

He couldn't lay a glove on Tony Blair!

No all round.

I'm guessing William Hague would have needed to float like a butterfly to avoid getting t**tted at Wath Comp, but it's not him either.

My Grandads brother was a bare knuckle fighter, and challenged Iron Hague to a bare knuckle money fight when he was British Champion, Iron Hague decline the challenge, the pussy! :)

I have heard of Kid Lewis but he wasn't one I immediately thought of. He did fight at several different weights. Probably at his best as a welterweight, or light heavy, if you prefer.

There's a big difference between Welter and light heavyweight.

Sorry, you are quite right. I was mixing up my welters and cruisers!
