Barratt Homes Belle Vue Development
« on August 11, 2015, 11:45:09 pm by VSC »
Over the summer the VSC have been in talks with the Barratt Homes development team about the Belle Vue development. Our aim is to ensure Belle Vue is remembered on the housing estate, and we have had several productive discussions surrounding street names, imagery use in the apartment block designs and potentially a monument/sculpture being commissioned. We have also been in contact with DMBC and the club who have been forward in offering their help if/when required.

We would like to reassure all Rovers supporters we are taking positive steps to ensure the former home of DRFC is never forgotten. If you have any ideas on how you think Belle Vue should be remembered, specifically in terms of a monument or sculpture, please share your ideas here.

If there isn't a road on that estate called Theo Streete then we might as well all call it a day! :rtid:

A Phoenix might be good. Or a replica of the nameplate from the locomotive?

Hope there is room for a Town End Terrace

Seriously though ... if it is a "memorial" to Belle Vue (the Ground) and / or Rovers then I would think a Plaque or replica of the Rovers Loco nameplate would be the way to go rather than individual names for Streets which would only be short term.

A simple plaque stating "built on the site of Belle Vue Ground - former home of Doncaster Rovers " would say much more in the future than "memorialising" ex star players Managers even Directors and in 200 years time would still be simple, short and understandable to anyone reading it

Street names were discussed early on in talks as Barratt were up against a deadline to send a list of proposed names to the council. This list could still be rejected/amended by the council, as they have the final say, but it is unlikely. The list we came up with included variations on each of the stands (Main, Town, Popular, Rossington) and variations of Albert Jenkins.

Please keep the ideas coming for memorials.

Or a combination of the two with the street name written on the replica of the plaque.

Not sure what you're getting at acko? The area is called Belle vue, the development is called belle vue and the bus lane in front of the development is called Belle Vue Way.
There are to be 5 new streets that obviously can't all be called Belle Vue as well?

The stadium is owned by the council and wasn't leased to Rovers until recently - that is why there were restrictions on building statues etc at the Keepmoat. And of course it "fits" having a monument at Belle Vue

What about Billy Bremner Boulevard, or simply BB Boulevard to save the council a bit of money on the sign?

When the grandkids asked me what BB meant it would give me great pride to inform them.

I'm lucky enough to be working in the same organisation as Dave penny at the minute so mentioned this to him. He jokingly mentioned Ryan's Avenue and liked Penny lane. He also said he'd cut the ribbon (I think that would be for his road only though 😈

Be good if there could be a small green area where the centre spot was and a plaque in place.

Should be kept to terrace relevant street names tho this will maintain the historical record rather than individuals names however great they are /were.

When it was mentioned earlier in the thread that the names that had been put forward referred to the stands and Albert Jenkins, I feel I'd better point out that by the time Rovers moved to Belle Vue in 1923 Albert had not had anything to do with the club for about 25 years. I do feel that there ought to be a plaque somewhere in the town for Albert (probably on the road in Hexthorpe where he died) but the suggestion connecting him with Belle Vue is historically just wrong.

As for the development a  plaque is all that is required, small, smart and to the point and located as close to where the centre circle would have been as possible. A circular communal garden would be good.
